The press, as they tend to do, wrote glorified press releases for these companies without ever stopping to evaluate the story. The few places that did actual journalism and told the real story got drowned out in the sea of shitty coverage parroting the trade line from corporations

Shrinkage is mostly shoplifting which is theft.
The other portion of shrinkage is damage and loss. But companies don’t lock up their goods because their products are being damaged or lost in transit or inventory.
Spent a month in North America earlier this year mainly in NY, High Point (NC) and Montreal. By and large as a short term visitor, I felt safe with some common sense and avoided some areas. In fact the only time I was harassed by a homeless was in Montreal but honestly, some parts of NY was not a pretty sight, people shooting up, knocked out on the streets, not sure whether they are dead or just unconscious, people just walked on by, peeing in the metro station, jumping over to get on station only to fight with another person who tried to stop him…NYC is a great city, I love being there to take on the vibes but below the glam lies the shit. I mock the US for having a shit joke of politics but beyond that, I hope that ultimately everyone stays safe, healthy and live life well with their loved ones.
No. That is insane thing to believe. Arnold, the republican governor, reclassified the felony threshold for theft to $950, along with some other technicalities. But theft under that limit was still a crime and prosecuted, just as a misdemeanor. All crimes of this sort are graded based on how much was stolen so CA is no different in this regard. But are they being arrested and charged? Story I heard is that the police are just overwhelmed and so technically could not just focus on these “small” crimes.
If we’re being generous they just didn’t understand their data and this was a genuine misunderstand. I don’t think there is much reason to be generous, especially given the time fame the data goes back to (trumps time in offfice)
