Bork was nowhere near as extreme as he was painted to be. His judicial record is not significantly less ‘liberal’ than Thurgood Marshall’s during the Carter Administration, for example. It is somewhat ironic that many judges forced through since have been far more extreme, or just plain worthless (Kavanaugh). But the broader issue was how completely his opposition set out to destroy him, not just defeat his nomination. That really was a watershed.

Trump’s age/health is a far bigger obstacle to a third term than the constitution will be

Michael Flynn , Douglas McGregor or Scott Ritter ?

That’s the absolute worst people I could think of, servile slaves of the Kremlin (exception Flynn, he is just insane and a servile slave of Trump); so I assume it’s one of those ?

Failing that, Russian citizen Steven Seagal ?

“You’re going to see a very senior special envoy, a person of great authority. As soon as possible.” - one of the sources said.

No, I am not actually joking and no, this is not funny. I would very much like it to not be one of the above, but since the above would be crazy, it could be.

One knows one lives in “Interesting Times”, when Gaetz (and Scott Ritter) sexual dalliance with underage girls is the least worry about a given appointment.

I mean if that was the main issue, it would only be disgraceful and humiliating for the US, but not actually dangerous for the state…

Sadly, I don’t see that happening (Musk and Trump rift). One can dream, but I don’t think it’s realistic, I am afraid.

I get it’s early and the damage hasn’t happened (well it has because his mere presence in our civic life is damage) but I’m kind at a YOLO point with. I read every day. I spoke to every person I could about how insanely unprepared he is, an astonishing thing to say given he had the ducking job for 4 years already, but no one gave a shit. People thought it was all lols. So here it is. I can only shrug.

We are going to die the dumbest of deaths

I understand you well. Might as well find amusement in tragedy. For a little while at least.

But of course, I am afraid. You too, I assume. But what can one do but watch in horror and try to at least get a psychologically healthy laugh in, if one is inclined for gallows humour. But yeah, it’s not really funny at all…

The biggest fools, in my opinion, are those who still cling to the idea that it’s not going to be that bad; despite empirical evidence, history, promises and behaviour.

It’s going to be awful, that is a cold certainty, but none of us can predict exactly how awful, due to the mercurial nature of Trump. But very little would shock me, sadly. We can only hope for the least worst outcome.

Wonder how the least bad outcome looks at the moment. Feels like an inevitable slide that started a while ago. Whatever checks, balances, regulations, etc. that Trump and his cronies don’t rip up, his successors will.

I wonder about that too. I don’t know what realistically the least worst outcome is.

Forwarded to a friend of mine who drafted Pete Stoyanovich with the second pick in the early nineties.

Anyway, I’m packing to move to London where @cynicaloldgit will be hosting me. Warn the dogs I’m coming.

I genuinely burst out laughing at the Defence pick. A Fox and Friends host with a little bit of National Guard experience…he is going to be led around by the nose. When Eisenhower was selecting his cabinet, he thought the hardest pick was who to run the Pentagon - he had managed the complexity of D-Day and the international coalition, but was still daunted by the 25,000 employees sitting atop the ‘military-industrial complex’. It is a budget of over $800 billion!!

The mind-blowing thing is that well over half of the Senate Committee that will be reviewing his nomination would be far better picks.

My only hope with these Trump selections are that they’re essentially there to pursue bullshit culture war talking points. I cannot imagine they have any interest in actually learning how to do their jobs and, hopefully, the actual departments will largely continue as normal.

I imagine that in at least some instances the senior civil servants will give their Secretary a nice pat on the head and find them a rubix cube to play with or something.

I think the point is to destroy the joint not run the joint. It’s gut everything with some contracts for mates. Putin’s sleeper operatives seeing the job to completion.

‘History repeats itself , first as tragedy , then as farce.’

I’ve been giving this thread a big swerve for my own mental health. I was just planning to return from time to time to inject a little parody ; like mischievously suggesting that Matt Gaetz was about to become AG.
