Yeah, I feel the same way—especially compared to the terrible pants and clothes players wear these days. 
But I think every one of us experienced that kind of grumbling about “current fashion trends” as teenagers, back when the older generation used to get worked up about it. Unfortunately, most people have simply forgotten by now that they were young once, too.

I owned the most outrageous and eye-catching outfits imaginable, but I had to leave the house dressed “normally” and then change clothes at a friend’s place.

What was wrong was that we were playing Man Utd in the FA Cup final when we had won F-all. We turned up looking cool while Man United turned up for business as usual. Obviously the suits weren’t the reason for the result but they fed into the wider spice boys narrative of continued underperformance and failure to bridge the gap to Arsenal, let alone United.
Yeah I get that is supposed argument I’ve just never bought it. You wear suits to the final to look good so what is the problem of putting thought into what those suits look like? It is criticism that always felt to me very much out of this line of thinking
