Reading between the lines , it does seem that there was some evacuation time given. Whether it was enough or not is subjective. As is the ethicality of shooting down a fossil frigate miles away from the warzone.
Not all countries have the same search and rescue capabilities though. It looked like Sri Lanka did their best though.
Mmm, they are using Patriots to shoot down Shaheeds. Another point that adds to the total lack of planning.
One interceptor costs several million dollars, I note.
I don’t think they have viable SHORAD defenses. The Bofors Lf7 for example helped India in shooting down those low flying drones.
Using Patriot’s is madness.
I find it very odd that Sri Lanka only picked up 32 if they were given warning that they were about to be sunk. Of course, it is possible Iranian captain refused to allow crew to abandon ship, but I am skeptical. 32 survivors sounds iffy,
In any case, this is hardly among the biggest problems with this war.
I’ve said a long time ago that point defense systems would be perfect in this role. Phalanx and Centurion have an effective range of roughly 2km. I can’t quite figure out why nobody has even tried a proof of concept on a CIWS against drones.
Surprised it’s only 1 km. They are very, very careful of ambushes then for sure.
Anyway, those Bofors used by the Indian army were massively upgraded with added electronics etc to make an anti aircraft gun converted to hunting drones.
That looks like a given,he is,after all the village idiots, idiot!
Indeed. Guns and drones is what you need to hunt drones, as well as helicopters, and jets in a pinch (perfectly ok to use combat jets against Shaheeds, imo).
Patriot is in extremely limited supply (and extremely expensive per interceptor) and is after all, the only system that can engage ballistics. Iran also has a lot of cruise missiles, so…
Ukraine does that. Geopards etc.

A slightly older video. But essentially this is a 60 year old technology which is heavily retrofitted. And were much maligned when the initial deal went through.
Yep. I know. I suppose I should have clarified as the Gepard is a anti air gun on a manned mobile chassis. Same concept, though, I was just imagining a static weapons installation with interlocking fields of fire at important nodes, bases, airfields etc that is semi autonomous.
Yeah, that works well.
Ukraine uses all sorts of calibers (they have to), as does others. Against drones, guns are indeed very nice.
Ukraine uses 50 cal, 7.62, 20mm and 30mm and more. I just mentioned Geopard as an example.
Then again, Ukraine faces hundreds of these per day, so their expertise in shooting down drones is rather higher (US and NATO has all the theoretical knowledge, but practical knowledge is different and comes with, often, necessity).
When the cost of shooting down the drone can’t be 200x or more the cost of making down the drone, the mathematics just don’t add up.
Patriots aren’t made for this battle. And every Patriot used here is a missile which is required in other areas.
Completely understandable Maria, few people of my aquaintance see a side as right in this, but have no illusions as to who started it and why!
Please go and take with you all of Akhmat and go die
(He is the commander of Kadyrov’s Akhmat, also called the TikTok brigade for a variety of reasons).
Indeed it is, Iran has been using Russian upgraded Shaheeds (Geran-2), which have far better counter measures than Iran’s domestic model. Unknown how many of the advanced Russian models they have. But I would assume maybe a 1000, maybe a bit less, maybe more.
All made in Alabuga.
Crazy how the US and NATO feels it should reinvent the wheel in addressing these threata or simple pretend it doesn’t exist. I was reading an article of a NATO exercise recently which involved a Ukrainian drone unit where the unit of 10 men rendered two battalions combat ineffective.
Shahed’s have been active on the battlefield for years now. Their mass use in this conflict was inevitable for planners to predict, surely, and here they are depleting missile stocks to take out $20k drones. Dumb.
