War in Iran : Trump's latest misadventure

What Trump should do (please, please do it), is to publicly announce he is going to travel on one of the tankers and state which one. Then it can sail through using only the protection they have now. I’m sure he will be perfectly safe and the tanker will be untouched…

Yes, these are the horrible mental gymnastics they use: “if you’re not with us, you’re against us”, but thankfully there are still some who see beyond such dangerous nonsense.

Yes, but his bone spurs!

It’s not his bone spurs that concern me, so much as that tiny piece of brain he seems to have lodged in his skull.

Fucking piece of ignorant illiterate uneducated shit!
Iran isn’t Afghanistan and who gave you the right to kill anyone based on their life situation?

As I have been saying, it is not necessarily so that Trump can just decide to stop bombing and leave. The other side gets a vote.

More and more people, including in Trump-land, is beginning to think this was a terrible mistake. Iran’s Theory of Victory is to engrave it and not just make it something that passes away with the famously short US news cycle. For Iran right now, have realised that Trump is highly likely not going to invade. That gives them actually the option to “just take it”, so they can inflict far more economic damage. It is a race to the bottom strategy, a strategy of the weak, but it can work if they are willing to be economically and industrially destroyed.
Imperrative for the Islamic Republic, when it fights such a one sided war, is to stay in it and inflict such a high cost that this adventure will not be launched again in 5-10 years. If it is able to. They may yield soon, but I do not think so at all.

And given that Iran is a geographical natural hegemon, states like China would have incentives to flood money in to rebuild it, as an example.

So depending on internal factors, this can go on for quite a while longer.

With how the Trump Administration is talking today, plus how the oil market has reacted, I would not want to be anywhere near one of those tankers in the Gulf waiting for a chance to transit the Straits.

The ‘even after the war ends’ part is key - the GCC will be aware that regardless of what Trump says, all he can do is leave, leaving the GCC holding the bag. This war will have established the limitations of American power in the region, and the limitations are greater than most thought just a month ago. I don’t think Iran even needs to continue their attacks to achieve that.

For now, US can successfully spin it as a victory to GOP base, using Rubio’s War Goals.

I don’t think Iran wants that though.

In any case, if this war ends without a very serious attempt by the US to secure the HEU gas, then I don’t know what to say really. Surely they must attempt to destroy or capture the canisters. Because now Iran will go for the nuke if able.

And so they should given their neighbours have nukes and can seemingly attack them at will with no rhyme or reason

One of the most basic questions that the Trump administration has failed to answer (repeatedly) is - what does a US victory look like? Hence the floundering around the idea of regime change, having already declared that the Iranian nuclear program was successfully destroyed. If you don’t have a clear objective, it is very difficult to have a coherent plan to achieve it.

However, the focus on that failure has somehow obscured the corollary, which is now becoming more important. What does an Iranian victory look like?
