From the article above:
The Isfahan governor, Mehdi Jamalinejad, said the damage had been inflicted even after coordinates of the historic sites had been circulated among the warring parties and after blue shield signs – denoting historical treasures under the 1954 Hague convention for the protection of cultural objects in war – had been put on the roofs of important buildings.
“Isfahan is not an ordinary city, it’s a museum without a roof,” Jamalinejad said in a speech posted on social media. “In none of the previous eras, not in the Afghan wars, not in the Moghul conquest, not even during the ‘sacred defence’ [the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war] was this ever done.”
“This is a declaration of war on a civilisation,” he added. “An enemy that has no culture pays no heed to symbols of culture. A country that has no history has no respect for signs of history. A country that has no identity sets no value for identity.”
100% spot on.
Yes, when you ship so much hardware in, you have overwhelming incentives to use it (even if you have made no such final decision) and the other side must then make a truly massive concession for you to not use it. I believe I have been saying that for many months too.
But that doesn’t necesarilly mean that the other side cannot yield since launching the war also has extremely negative consequences you must weigh up against a major concession.
I mean, if Ukraine had accepted to cut links with Europe and become Belarus 2, Russia had not necesarilly invaded. It migth have, but not necesarilly so.
Both things can be true at the same time. I believe I said months ago that time was running out for Iran to abandon their nuclear program, or there would be an attack (of some sort). That hourglass had almost no sand left in it when the US started to redirect carriers and ship in air defence and munitions.
I think you misunderstood what I meant when I said that Iran would take the cease fire to be something like what they did last summer. I think any formal agreement at this point is going to amount to a strategic and diplomatic humiliation for the US, or Iran will keep going. I suspect something along the lines of a Chinese-brokered regional agreement is where Iran will start reaching. They may even stop firing at their Gulf neighbours if and when the US withdraws, because they don’t need to - everyone will understand that using the Straits of Hormuz is conditional on Iran’s approval, and the US has just demonstrated that they are not able to change that.
There is absolutely no way that they will meekly allow Trump to declare victory and wait for the next ‘lawnmower war’. The US has made a strategic error, and doesn’t even have a credible threat of a ground war (“you don’t have the cards!”) to use for arbitrage.
At this point, the Gulf states are asking themselves why they have US bases on their territory - they are doing the opposite of preventing Iranian attack.
Then I misunderstood. I thought you were confident, that since Iran did not want this war, they would accept a cease fire (end to hostilities with the US) from the United States if given the chance, and I argued that not enough pain had been caused to the world economy for Iran to stop since they want to deter a future strike.
Pretty sure we will see multiple more terror attacks in Europe and the US before hostilities cease. Clear indications that the IRGC have been given such orders, and will likely use criminal bands (such as Foxtrot in Scandinavia).
But we agree then perhaps. Imo, war is young, Trump wants out, but there isn’t a path out yet…
Ps. I agree regarding the Chinese (imo, more likely to be Russian, but could be Chinese) brokered limited cease fire, but I doubt it would stop Iranian retaliatory attacks against random Jews and US, as well as Pro American European targets abroad. But I do not agree (not sure what your opinon about that is, and not interested in putting words in your mouth) that it is likely that there will be any sort of deescalation from Iran in the month of March. Happy to be wrong about that though.
The biggest strategic blunder of this US-Israel assault is that it cornered Iran so much that their only option is to keep fighting.
Wrong, the biggest strategic blunder is having absolute bellends as political leaders🤣
I don’t have any real sense of the tempo, but I do think I have a sense of what to watch. Iran is essentially turning this into an economic war, and is in a very real sense targeting the price of oil. The IEA’s intervention to attempt to stabilize the oil market simply prolongs that. I don’t know what number the Iranian leadership has in mind, but they want the West to feel real economic pain. Americans may be untroubled by their military murdering children, but they will be howling if they are paying $5/gallon at the pump.
I also think there will be some attacks in Washington, in some form or another. American strikes targeted Iranian administration figures, we can expect retaliation in kind. The Secret Service may be stretched very thin protecting every member of Congress.
I found that statement is so heartbreaking, but also reflect the usual thinking of “It doesn’t affect me, I don’t really want to know or care”.
It is the brutal truth - their government has been putting out snuff videos of Caribbean fisherman set to video game music for months, and the $0.50 increase in pump prices has attracted far more concern.
How long do you think it will take to reach $200?
Fool’s errand guessing. You could try to calculate supply and demand, derive some form of scarcity curve to predict the price point at which the market will clear, but that doesn`t account for traders. Once speculative money piles in, we could see huge increases in a matter of days, even though the implicit scarcity is six weeks away.
edit: I have no idea what is going on with the formatting of my text. I had my keyboard set to French when I started, then switched. But I cannot find any characters that would cause that.
edit2: who knew the French apostrophe was different, and not actually in the English character set? All this time I thought it was the same key in a different place.
It’s the damn bilingual keyboard that we get in Canada when buying PCs.
Absolute fucking disgrace!!! You motherfuckers attack Iran unprovoked and now you’re denying them the opportunity that some players will have once in their If lifetimes.
If Infantino wasn’t such a simp for Trump he’d be pulling all the matches out of there. They should have all the Iran matches either in Canada or Mexico
