Iran, or the IRGC faction behind this, has assessed that and likely gambles that Trump does not want to go back to war and that they are free to raise the cost and humiliation, due to how desperate Trump appers to be with getting the war over with. And they do want to hurt him.

I think the basic logic is that if the Straits are re-opened, Iran remains under siege but the US does not face the same time pressure. Hitting a warship makes for headlines, but what really matters is whether or not merchant ships are willing to traverse the Straits - the fact that they might be shot at makes it unlikely, US protection or otherwise.
Fundamentally, the regime in Iran expects they will be attacked again, and are largely indifferent as to the timing - tomorrow or three months from now are largely the same

I think IRGC factions also gamble that any return to war, would be relatively short anyway and that US would not want to afford more than 2-5 weeks of bombing and I honestly believe that many of them think they can eat that fine, if they win.
