Carragher was 1.85m, Henchoz who worked well with Hyypia was only 1.88m
Thing with VVD is that he has it all, same with Matip. Rhys Williams has height but he doesn’t to me have the attributes yet that mean he is anywhere good enough to play in defence for Liverpool, as for Phillips the jury is out on that one.
Henderson is only 1.82m yet I’ve seen elsewhere you suggest he plays with Phillips.
Thiago Silva, Puyol, Ricardo Carvalho and Cannavaro are 4 of the best centre backs of the last 20 years! And Kabak is bigger than all of those.
Kabak seems to have a good leap and is (to my eye) very aggressive in the air. I don’t think he’ll have too many problems, especially if paired with a player like Van Dijk.
I’d worry more about his decision making than anything.
Phillips and Rys both lack the yard of pace needed to make it at the top level, although they seem to have most everything else.
We’ll see what kabak is like. It’ll be a better evaluation this year seeing him without VVD, as everyone looks miles better with him lol.
We will probably spend a decent amount on a CB this summer, and he’s got a great chance to make sure we spend it on him. Interested to see how each of the new guys do.
We need to step away from that Bayern game, when i inserted that video into my post,i said it’s not what i was basing my opinion on,it was merely a small example of bad traits i’d seen in his game over the course of watching him in around 20 games (as thats the only Schalke matchday video with him in that i could find, other than the usual lets make a player look good ones).
I’m just pointing these things out cos it’s what i’ve seen, occasional poor positional play and decision making is the negative part of his game, which isn’t a bad thing, all players at that age aren’t perfect and need to work on them to iron them out, just in an ideal world he’d be doing them at another club for another couple of seasons.I know full well, some of those issues he’s had at Schalke he won’t have here playing with better players and coaches.
I have mentioned his positives and truely hope he does well here,i’m not bashing him to be an arsehole looking for an arguement,i’m also not going to blow smoke up peoples arse’s (who haven’t watched him) and tell them he’s the second coming of VVD,infact i’m trying to let people know not to set their expectations too high just yet,as he’s still a work in progress and a kid with potential.
EDIT: on the Height thing,Man City just bought a CB in Nathan Ake and he’s only 5"11,it’s not all about the height its how well you can jump,Les Ferdinand was probably one of the best headerer’s of a ball i’ve seen and he was only 5"11
Plenty of height there, and he has other attributes that make up for a perceived lack of height, namely his good leap and good pace.
From what I’ve read, he sounds to be very good at attacking the ball in the air - that’s something that sometimes catches Gomez out (who’s only 2cm taller). If he’s as quick as Gomez, and a better header of the ball then when it comes to defensive duties, his attributes suggest that we are golden, especially with the deal that Edwards has spun.
Obviously, his ability to actually play football (and not just jump high and being fast) in Klopp’s system is the biggest question mark…a question mark that applies to every player that we sign.
I don’t think Rhys Williams has the knowledge on positioning, his wild challenges against Man Utd were very amateur, I’m not writing him off but at this moment in time he is League 1 level at best.
Yes he needs seasoning, I meant physical attributes. Some of those wild challenges result of not being quick enough though. If I don’t get there now, he’s by me… lunge
I’ll see what I think of him when he plays I think, my idol as a keeper was Casillias as he was the same size to me, after years of being told I’m too short for a keeper
Never heard of him. So done my reading. Seems like he has the raw attributes. Now needs to spend the first month excelling on the training pitch.
I’d expect the more experienced Ben Davies to get a look in first. But anyway, welcome the lad to Anfield.
Turns 21 next month. Quite rare for a 21 year old to be in the first eleven for a Prem team. Needs to work hard to impress in training and earn a place on the bench (admittedly with our injuries , won;t be a hard task).
If he fulfills his promise we get a player with a lot of upside, for years to come, at a very good price - something like half what we were quoted before the season kicked off.
If he doesn’t quite do that, we have a loan player to help us for the rest of the season, a motivated fella who will be trying to take his chance in an area where we are well short. All the while we keep our options open.
It’s perfectly set up, given the difficult circumstances in the position.
We are on a bit of a downer right now as our league form splutters along and the title looks too far away. Hopefully we regroup, make sure we finish top four, and then build up a head of steam as the season progresses, ideally giving it a real good go in the CL, where the best or most consistent team doesn’t necessarily win the thing.
I’ve seen very little of this lad playing but reading and listening to what some are saying about him is very confusing some say he’s like moreno and Lovren others think a young Virgil. I’m just looking forward to see how good he really is.
Regardless of height jumping ability can be improved significantly with Plyometric exercises this is done in a lot of sports including basketball the pivot is usually the smaller of the players and can then almost jump just high as the 7 footers. I played handball for 25 years and after practice I could jump over the defensive wall and hold it up for a few seconds before shooting. The same with shooting from distance in football with practice and Gym exercises you can increase the power and technique of your shot very significantly I remember Peter Lorimer from Leeds used to practice for hours and could score from 40 to 50 yards very powerfully.
