During the game, my mates and I discussed what we thought would shape not just Liverpool’s short-term future but also provide the basis for long-term stability and we agreed that Wirtz and Isak most likely weren’t what Iraola needed to build his system for reasons that we thought were either structural or just personal characteristics of those players because of which they don’t fit into this side.
However, we weren’t sure that Iraola was brave enough to substitute or bench Wirtz in particular and put Szoboszlai in that position, with Nyoni and Mac Allister holding. That was exactly what he did some twenty minutes later. I applaud him for that - he’s talked the talk in his pre-match presser but he walked the walk when it came to making subs.

What were their views on Macallister the last two seasons because he looked far poorer than you two mentioned in this post?
Or do you consider Iraola is trying to put something together? Then again every signing Man Utd makes shows they are building something so perhaps maybe you are your friends opinions are just opinions.
All of this is tiresome. Wirtz stuff players playing well and not well. It’s all a work in progress.

The football is horrible right now but with us being more solid and the points on the board, so far I think Iraola has had a decent enough start.
We haven´t really played anyone good as such, but we´ve kept it tighter and I think as a new manager he can be comfortable with the points we have so far. Especially with the win over Atleti.

has the football in the PL changed / improved so much in the last three years that we are not able to pin opponents back in their half and play around their box?

also, what happened to triangles? The combinations between Robbo, Gini and Sadio were deadly and even worked with other players coming in. Should be a basic but feels like we’ve completely abandoned them in training in the last three years.
I was expressing my (and their) opinion on the matter. I’m genuinely baffled by your reaction and I don’t know what you mean when you say that Mac Allister was bad for two seasons.
Speaking of Mac Allister, he was absolute gold in his first two seasons here before stinking out the place in his third. He looks back to his old self now and long may it continue. Meanwhile, neither Isak and Wirtz combined at their best at Liverpool come anywhere close to his levels of the first two seasons.
We can afford as much patience as we like but I think I’ve already said that I genuinely couldn’t remember a big signing at Liverpool that needed time to show they were good enough after being pretty bad initially (I don’t count Firmino because he was badly mishandled by Rodgers). I think we’re that kind of club for big signings - you’re either good enough from the off or you never get close to justifying your price tag.
I’m really glad that Iraola isn’t afraid to bench expensive players when he feels they are underperforming. He substituted three most expensive signings in the history of the club within fifteen minutes of each other because he felt they weren’t playing well. I really can’t wait to see how they react to that.
Most teams now are now using a man v man press and therefore don’t automatically sit back in a low block inviting pressure and giving the opposition the ball.

They basically sat out the midweek game.
We no longer have a Sadio who was one of the most unpredictable players I’ve ever seen. You couldn’t get away with being aggressive against him as he would leave you on the spot on your arse.
We have a number of players that have been very predictable for a long time and teams know how to deal with them. I do think these players are making an effort to step out of their comfort zones. Whether that will be enough is another question.
What I see is we hoof the ball up field a lot yet have noone challenging effectively for the ball and noone ready to pick up the second ball. Improve that and up the aggression a bit and we might become much more effective.
