Sure, but its entirely possible Iraola thought that the most important thing for the last 20 minutes was to get fresh legs up top so we are able to press them with high intensity. I wouldnāt make the assumption that he made substitutions with the idea who is currently playing the worst needs to come off.

I am liking Andoni more and more now. Getting involved with the youth LFC academy is great, hopefully we will get a few home grown youngsters joining the first team soon.

I didnāt know where else to put this but Iāve been having some thoughts for a while with regards to the teamās future. Man City game seemed like a decent measuring stick for where the team was at, though it was a crying shame that the referee absolutely ruined us and the injuries had robbed Iraola of his in-form players.
However, even with that in mind, there are some things that are noticeable:
- Majority of players seem to be buying into Iraolaās ideas. Thereās certainly more aggression, more desire to press and win duels. Iām getting the impression that players are even competing for the second balls more often than last season, too. Brentfordās style of play might put a spanner in the works here, though, even temporarily but that should be an even tougher test in this physical aspect.
- Transitions into counter-attack look better, though the decision-making in the final third still leaves a lot to be desired.
- The team looks better at defending from the front when Koumas and Munoz are playing, for all of their limitations.
- Isak and Wirtz donāt seem like players who will fit Iraolaās vision in the long term and Iām afraid that Barcola might go down the same route, even though his tracking back is admittedly an encouraging sign - but his offensive game looks suspect so far.
- The team is very lopsided - Iraola might look for a hard-working midfield, Klopp-style, instead of the selection he currently has in order to achieve that balance.
- New sporting director should do his best to support him by taking a step back and not chasing big money signings when there are gaping holes throughout the squad that have to be plugged.

With the aftermath of the defeat by the Cheaters still raw, I believe with the pre-selection injuries that robbed him of his full options for team selection, and most of the other players still learning their lines from the managers script, Andoni Iraola deserves an awful lot of credit for just getting on with the jobā¦ After all, we held our own for two thirds of the game with what was, a makeshift line-up.
My biggest fear is that Hughes or whoever else was involved in the recruitment, has had their head turned towards a āHarlem Globetrotterā type of squad assembly of all stars, as opposed to the āgrit and determinationā for solid workmanlike endeavour.
To me, seasons end will tell us two thingsā¦
a) How good (or limited) our manager was in his first season.
b) Which players do not, nor never will, have the right DNA to play for LFCā¦
Why is every post on here a two footed lunge on Wirtz. Itās fucking tiresome.
