Run my own cricket tournaments. Have done so for a while now. Entered regional tournaments with my Academy, also for a while now. Entered a tournament run by an Academy that has never hosted a tournament before. Just drove almost two hours with my u-13 team only to find out that our game was postponed because the coaches agreed to it (no I fucking didn’t). Just had to deal with a crowd of angry/disappointed parents and a whole bunch of disappointed kids and starting on the way back home. But before then, an erupting volcano carries less intensity that the shellacking I just dished out to the completely clueless nut jobs that conspired to arrange this farcical excuse of a tournament.

I am still seething.

My wife and I both come from large scouse families, mine red and hers blue and I have never heard from any of them the “we are scouse, not english” mantra. They are english so of course they were all supporting England in the world cup. I was very heartened to see the players and fans were of many colours…

Just want to say I am embarrassed by that part of the English support. It’s a good part of why I’m not too bothered about the England football team, even as an Englishman, although I’d be a liar if I didn’t say that when the World Cup got going it didn’t pull me in.

Still, those fans seem witless, and there is a jingoistic and almost racist undercurrent that I want no part of, at all.

I grew up on the Wirral and consider myself Scouse, albeit not as dyed-in-the-wool Scouse as Liverpool proper.

I’ve lived in America for 17 years and in many ways it has made me miss England, or at least the memory of, and idea of, England. England has its problems like anywhere else, and I can’t believe my fellow countrymen voted for Brexit. There’s a right wing lean in many countries these days, although the MAGA version plumbs the deepest and ugliest depths.

Still, I love the English sensibility, sense of humor, sense of fair play, sense of self-deprecation, sense of looking out for others, sense of rooting for the underdog… and so much more besides.

When I see little-Englanders at their ugliest, I am staunchly Scouse.
When I see MAGA loons and dislike some aspects of living in America, I am staunchly English.

It’s complicated.

Here in Germany, we have the far-right AfD and for me, as a son of Tamil parents from Sri Lanka and as a people with Aspergers syndrome, they are a treatment. The AfD are xenophobic, ableistic, anti-feministic, anti-queer, against the German basic law (Grundgesetz) and are pro Russian. #FCKAfD

Ok, firstly I’d like to say that the Missus is an extremely impressive lady who had a very successful career in IT marketing at a time when it was a heavily male dominated field. She was the head of sales for all of Europe and ran her own company. On top of that she is a sweet and kind person who is loving and caring to all those around her, especially me.
She really is a paragon of human excellence in every way.

However, yesterday she microwaved a crumpet.

All things considered, she’s still in credit.

I support all the home countries equally unless they are playing against England…I have 2 welsh speaking friends who live here in Liverpool who were full on England supporters during the World Cup.

Maybe people of my generation are much less exposed to the social media bile and hate.

I love my Scottish friends. Scotsmans (in any case the generations from the vintages from 1991 or 1992) have not anti-German sentiments. It’s very sad, Scotland has not achieved the round of the last 32. The opening match of UEFA EURO 2024 between Germany and Scotland i would not forget. Scotsmans and Germans has celebrated together.

Just on my way home on the tube. Luckily my train from Lime st was on time. Previous train was cancelled so we had doubled load of football fans on board.

It was a great but hectic two days in Liverpool.
