Is it just trolls or do some Man Utd fans actually belief that Ole was good?
I donāt disagree with you in general. I think Iāve said here before that I was a fan of Brunoās at Sporting and wanted us to sign him, but soured after seeing how petulant heād become. Iām a bit sympathetic because of the terrible situation heās in, but I also agree that a captain has to rise above it.
I will note that Roy Keane once got arrested and had to be bailed out by his manager on the eve of an FA Cup Final. Say what you want about Bruno, but at least heās never done anything like that.
The player or the manager? Heās a bit of a cult figure as a player because of him scoring so many off the subs bench, namely in Fergie time of the CL final in 99.
His time as a manager was mostly about vibes and a welcome change from the toxicity of the Mourinho era. They got some big wins and were consistently in the CL each year, and thereās a belief that he was building something when the club signed Ronaldo against his wishes and that derailed him. There could be some truth to that I suppose, but the reality is that Oleball was just more of the sam shithouse counter-attack style that has typified the post-LVG united. Good enough to win more often than lose, but not good enough to claim the big prizes, because they had literally no answer against a low block.
I do think that had they won that penalty shootout in the EL final against I think Valencia? Things might have turned out a bit different for them. The Ronaldo thing was so stupid, they bought him because he was being heavily linked with City at the time. They didnāt need him, and his presence upset the balance theyād gotten within the squad at the time.
In the present day, I think itās a case of āabsence makes the heart grow fonderā with United fans when discussing Ole, most of them would bite your hand off to go back to those days now.
I have a friend who is a United fan, and I think his point was that he actually enjoyed going to the match when he was manager. So, yes, a good vibes thing.
Yeah manager, fair enough, probably slightly lost on me as I remember that 5-0
Can understand the player thing, weāve had a few similar over time.
That would make sense. Ole did at least offer a connection to the clubās success under Fergie, and much of what he talked about was through that lens. I would imagine a lot of current Utd fans would have Ole back ahead of the most recent managers.
Think too many United fans look at the results they got with Ole and equate it to performance. He might have got middling results but as team performances go , they were fucking dire.
He was almost certainly the best manager for the players they have/had, at least compared to ETH and Amorim.
Itās a decent squad for counter-attacking football. ETH understood this when he set up for the FA Cup final v ManC.
Thatās probably the weight of expectations. They had a side that was closer to mid-table than top of the table. But expectations are top of the table. If that same side were Everton or Aston Villa, the supporters probably would have been happy.
Yeah this is a really good point - they still had De Gea bailing them out in a lot of games, and players like Bruno, Rashford, Greenwood popping up with goals to get them over the line, but for the most part they were shite. Lots of comedy with Maguire and Lindelof back there too.
Itās weird because I feel like the Ole days were the peak banter era for United, even though theyāre much worse now.
I say this unironically, but he āunderstood the clubā and got a lot of benefit from that. It allowed him to ride, or even raise the vibes by saying the right things, by emphasizing things the fans think they want, and that generated a lot of positivity. Remember, that seminal PSG win that gave us the ATG Rio gif was not just about the win. It was because it was done with a collection of young academy players on the pitch. You see, Ole understood the club. He knew that players with an attachment to the club were more valuable than high paid established players at Utd for an early retirement. He was bringing the Fergie approach back.
But it was smoke and mirrors. That PSG win was an utter fluke aided in large part by a really bad penalty given to them and with players who ultimately were never going to be Utd standard. That sort of performative stuff can be important for a manager. It is obviously a huge part of Kloppās appeal and success. But to get real success there has to be more substance underneath and ultimately Ole didnt have it. You could see from the reality that many of their best periods of play came towards the end of games they were chasing after they had thrown the tactics and formations out of the window and just had players doing what they felt needed to be done to score goals. His football ideas were ignored by his players, the bulldozed their way to salvaging points, and then he went out of spoke about character and the Utd way, playing the final whistle etc to the fans and they ate it up. But by the following week theyād find themselves throughoughly outplayed by Crystal Palace for 70 minutes
It was funny, now itās just pathetic.
Itās still pretty funny
Oh yeah definitely if you canāt laugh at the team at that minute you can definitely laugh at whatever the Jimreaper is doing.
Have I just woken up in an alternative universe?
Trump in the WH and being a prick,
The US siding with Russia
People on this forum praising Oleā¦
I am speechless
I think he gets a lot for that Covid season but it was a massive anomaly and the one people should put an asterix on regardless that itās Man City or not that won it.
Theyāve regressed from being a decent side under LVG to a counter attacking side under Mourinho to a really counter attacking side under Ole to whatever that is now
No one is praising him, just understanding why some Man Utd fans may think fondly of him and his time there.
Amorim, oh Amorim.
But no worries, youāve got my full support for turning another corner next week.
Just go gun down the Arse.
They are due another turning of the corner to be fair.
