I would like us to sell Phillips. He could have a decent career in the Championship.
He’s not young anymore. Set him free.
Final year of contract was what I thought we were discussing. Thought my mentioning of 2025 would have cleared that up.
every player who is moved on, they have a “final year”. every captain has a “final year” too if you look at it that way. I can’t remember a time a LFC captain lost the armband and remained at the club another year, however.
homegrown. probably the only reason he’s still at the club and will continue to be.
TBF, We never got rid of Souness and Rush, they wanted to go.
Sami Hyypia?
Its not unusual
We’ve been open flogging him for about three years now. Only reason he’s still here is no one matching our valuation and a bunch of poorly timed injuries.
Even the article you linked is talking about home-grown players in light of him probably leaving.
Tommy Smith lost it… Then went on to score the header in the CL final a few years later.
In November 1973 , after Smith complained to Shankly at being left out of the team for a game, he had the big disappointment of losing the captaincy to Emlyn Hughes. This resulted in Smith almost leaving Liverpool. Earlier, Hughes had told Shankly to remove the captaincy from Smith and give it to a younger man.
Phil Thompson had the captaincy taken off him when it was handed to Souness in 81
Imagine Trent telling Klopp to remove the captaincy from Hendo and give it to someone younger
And then Jürgen gives it to Doak.
I don’t “want” to sell anyone, as such, as it implies we have bad characters, or terrible players.
Ok, fair enough, someone like Nat Phillips should be sold, but only so he can play some footy for someone. I hope he gets a good move.
Beyond that I think I want us to sell Thiago, as three veterans is overkill, and I’d like us to get Lavia.
But good luck to all of them. There’s no reds I don’t like, which is nice.
I thought openly flogging someone was frowned upon these days.
Of the senior CM we have, Thiago and Fabinho would have to go before Hendo is even considered. Hendo to a buying club is what, 15-20m for any club who might feel generous, excluding the Middle Eastern clubs of course. But to us, his influence and example as a person in the dressing room and as a player for this great club is priceless that not many others in the squad can easily take over yet. Hendo will leave this club on his own terms either through retirement or a club he thinks he can contribute more still like Milner did and he has earned that.
It is a point that the club captain’s responsibilities go further than what happens on the pitch on matchdays.
Didn’t Jamie Redknapp leave on a free whilst captain?
He did, also on the back of playing 41 games in his last 3 seasons with us.
Lol, sorry, my original point didn’t actually offer any insight or debate. I will blame the Gin.
I am not directing this comment at you or anyone in particular.
People find it far to easy write players off and there are some players who get targeted more. A lot of players under performed last season, so going with your basis of Hendo not being the player he was 3-4 seasons for the reason to sell him then why be so restricted. Why don’t well sell VVD, Robbo, Salah, etc? They have all declined….
I agree with your second point, I think his leadership is very important and to lose him and Milner in one summer would leave a huge void in our squad’s leadership.
And according to recent social media posts, he is using the new signings as motivations to come into the season VERY fit. He looks like a beast right now. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.
It’s the staying fit that he struggles with. Could see him coming off the bench against Chelsea and bossing it (to no net point difference) for 30 mins, getting injured in training soon after and then struggling to get back to ‘peak’ fitness for months.
When did Hendo struggle to stay fit? It was rare. He’s averaging 41 games per season for 12(!) years. He’s had 3 seasons when he played less than 40-50+ games, two of which when he had that frustrating heel problem. His availability has been very good for a long time.
We’re so frustrated these days with injuries that we’re calling every one of our players injury prone. Who is next, Alisson?
Hard to disagree with you there
Sorry, I thought we had been talking about Thiago!
