Who would you buy? (Part 2)

Both are more effective playing from the central, and both are not fast enough to provide real threats from the flanks. Also, Kerkez’s offensive capabilities are crap.

Besides, teams with effective wingers are destroying everyone else all over Europe. Had we spent 100m to buy Kvaratskhelia last winter instead of Wirtz, we probably would have remained in the title race by now.

The footballing ability? Yes. The person? Not a hope in hell.

I’m the opposite, personally.

Would rather us have an aggro, passionate Scouser than a loaf of soggy bread of a footballer.

Each to their own though.

And teams being destroyed have wingers too…

And teams without wingers are all destroyed.

I got to admit, @rab’s post above on Suarez got me thinking.

A very fair and valid argument.

They can still play centrally, or at the very least that inside left space.

Milner and Hendo as player-coaches. Enforce some standards.
Most frustrating thing about watching this year’s lot is the mental fragility.

You need real wingers to do effective overlaps with full-backs and to launch quick counters. These central attackers lack the necessary pace and dribbling skills to do both.

They wouldnt be overlapping though they would be coming inside.

I hear you, I would very much be on board with your suggestion. To keep the costs down I limited it to three signings - a pricey versatile option on the wing in Diomande, a Prem proven free defender in Senesi, and a deal for Camavinga with Macca going the other way.

If we can do more business than that, bring it on!

Swapping Maca for Camavinga will do awful things for our ability to use the ball intelligently.

Maybe that’s ok with a shift in our identity that prioritizes energy and bite.that surely requires a new manager, and a replacement who clearly prioritizes that. But most of all before any moves like that are made it requires a come to Jesus meeting trying to figure out what the hell sort of team we think we are

That’s what she said.

Not good enough

I’m of the view that Wirtz as the 10 and Macca as one of the 8s is not enough steel in the midfield. It needs a better balance.

I would add a defensive central midfielder who is athletic, with good pace and size, and is decent on the ball. I think Camavinga ticks those boxes.

So does Anderson, and Wharton, and they are home grown so I wouldn’t say no to them either - I’m only mentioning Camavinga on the assumption that we are watching every penny, and Real Madrid might want Macca.

The overarching point of who the manager will be, and what style are we setting out to achieve, is paramount. I very much agree with that.

Maybe. But context. I’m assuming Konate is off and we have Virg, Leoni, Jacquet and Gomez. This season showed us we could do with a fifth central defender. If we aren’t throwing a lot of money at it because of priorities elsewhere, Senesi on a free might be worth a look.

He would be an experienced option, able to rotate and see some action, while the assumption is that in time the younger lads will come to the fore.

I’m not wed to Senesi as such, and if there is another experienced option on a free to bolster the group, bring it on. But if Virg and Gomez are two that are retained, I think we need five central defenders. If the budget stretches to paying good money for another, great. But not before a winger or midfielder for me.

To carry 5 CB’s (or 9 defenders) on the books, we need European football (I don’t think we’d do it in the Conference, question about the EL).

Hopefully we’ll have that…
