Who would you buy? (Part 2)

Are we now all looking at games to see the new Mo…could it be Castellanos of The Hammers…only a suggestion…

He’s a striker.

Yep…just putting names forward…

Nwaneri?

Rumours that Arsenal would sell as it is pure profit. Could play on the wing or as a second striker.

Young with room to develop further, but whenever I’ve seen him he looked strong, with a good shot and a lot of talent. They sent him on loan but I think he is possibly getting choked out by Arsenal’s check book approach?

They would rue the day. We sign him and Xabi unleashes a world class talent.

Agreed may have good stats but watched a game he was in and made a few mistakes that could have led to a goal

Well if we can’t carry 5 CB then JoGo needs replacement. We can’t go into next season with just him, an ageing virg and two players coming off serious injury with no PL experience.

The problem is offloading JoGo will cut down our homegrown ranks further, and we are in short of them.

There is a reason why we tried (and failed) to get Guehi. The buyback clause for Quansah is still on the table, but we are likely to wait until 2027 to activate it.

I think this is the first time in history our starting 11 has zero English/British presence. It is very similar to Arsenal during Wenger’s later years or Inter under Mourinho.

Gordon is limited and aggression will only get him so far. He’s having a better season than Gakpo, but a) that’s not hard and b) Gakpo has recorded the same goals as Gordon plus one more assist.

If we’re looking for a new winger, we really ought to take a look at Betis’ Ezzalzouli. 24-year-old Moroccan, Barcelona are rumoured to be looking to buy back. Not as fast as Gordon, but far more ability and he doesn’t lack aggression or work rate. I’ve watched him only a few times, but each time he’s reminded me of Diaz. He would also be a lot cheaper.

Gordon works much harder and isn’t terrified of his own shadow.

He’s also scored twice as many CL goals this season as Gakpo has in his career.

5 of Gordon’s goals are penalties and 4 came against Qarabag.

If we’re comparing him against Gakpo’s stats, we’re setting a very low bar.

Hence why other reasons were mentioned, you (erroneously) brought stats into the discussion.

He’s also the only one of our CBs who can cover at full back when needed. Given the injuries to Bradley and Leoni, Jaquet coming off his own injury, the age and relative inexperience of those two, and Frimpong’s consistent niggles the last person I’d want to see leave would be Gomez. And that’s based on Konate staying.

Think Leoni would count as U21 for both the Prem and European squads and Jaquet as U21 in the PL. If there’s one spot in the squad we could and probably should carry an extra man it’s at the back and Gomez gives us some of the flexibility we’d want.

The fact that he works harder and isn’t afraid to get stuck in doesn’t make him good enough.

The original question was Gordon or Gakpo, that’s it. It isn’t that serious.

To be honest, if we’re comparing Gordon to Gakpo prior to this season, I’d have Gakpo in our team every day. Scoring in big games, doubling up as a left back, not cutting inside and shooting every damn time, working so well with the rest of the team (especially when it came to Salah finding him at the back post and vice versa).

I miss that version of Gakpo - then again, I miss that version of virtually every Liverpool player… There’s no doubt the club will need to strengthen in the summer but the most strengthening needs to be done in the head coach role first and foremost.

I think this goes to why we need a fifth CB.

We haven’t really had one since Ragnar Klavan. He was pretty useful. A solid player but didn’t seem to mind too much being the spare wheel.

It’s because our likely current 4 all have fitness/injury/workload questionmarks.

Four good options is plenty. Assuming they have quality - a given, and are fit and available. But as I said above, if two of them next season are Gomez and an older VVD, we definitely need five options.

VVD
Jacquet
Leoni
Gomez
One other

The ‘one other’ could be a modest option, and then we go bigger on the position again when VVD and Gomez depart in summer 2027.

In the meantime, our priorities this summer, notwithstanding the preference and set up of the new manager, assuming that happens, are a really good winger and a midfielder who can protect the defence and pass well enough, through the lines, so we can get on the front foot.

It’s impossible to say how many signings there will be and we don’t know if there will be any surprise exits either, but I’m keeping the changes at a modest level, assuming we have to cut our cloth somewhat after an iffy season, and after going big last time.
