I don’t think that description applies to Porro. He’s the only one Tottenham player I’d have here in a heartbeat. Mentally, he always seems up for the fight, especially lately when the going got really tough for them. I doubt he’ll be there for much longer, regardless of whether they go down (which I don’t think will happen).
We have experience we that! Joking aside, it wasn’t the impression I got from him when it comes to the eye test - though it’s the attacking aspect of his game that caught my attention. Good crossing ability, good set-piece ability, knack of attacking the box… That said, Frimpong is a player of similar profile, so I doubt the club would go in for Porro but he’s still a player I rate.
My impression is that while he’s never been a “defender” he’s not usually that bad. I did do a little looking and found another stat, this time from 2024 that said he had the highest dribblers tackled success rate in Europe… so to me that signals he’s yet another player that has given up this season. He’s literally gone from best to worst.
Could that be team orders though as Spurs have struggled getting the ball forward through midfield and may have tried getting Porro to stay up to compensate?
Interesting and confirms what I have seen from him in the past. I think he’s a really good player and we can benefit from his services. Is it a position the club prioritizes in this window? Maybe not.
Speaking about Spurs, apart from Porro, another player to consider is Kulusevski. He has been injured for about a year. Prior to that, he was an integral part of the team. Plays predominantly on the right wing, so possible replacement for Salah.
I can’t imagine we would have much to spend after buying Jacquet. This is going to be a sell to buy window with Elliott likely already budgeted.
Personnally I think the Spurs will survive at the expense of the Hammers.
For a relatively modest budget:
Bowen 40m (if relegated)
Said El Mala 45m
Hugo Larssen 45m
Partially offset by: Endo (7m), Tsimikas (7m), Chiesa (10m), Koumas (12m), Stephenson (4m), Jaros (12m) would give us a net of 78m which I think with Jacquet is already pushing it.
Can’t see us doing more than that without some big sales. Hate to lose them but selling Alisson and MacAllister might make sense from a fiscal perspective. The prices of Diomande, Anderson, etc certainly seem unapproachable without one or both going.
Jones I believe should be retained, Bajcetic won’t fetch much until he can stay healthy so should be retained due to upside and what I expect him to add to the squad if healthy.
There was money for Guehi available last summer so I’m not sure that the Jacquet signing impacts the cash available this summer anymore than that would have.
We know that they tend to be quite careful on what they spend and trying to balance that, but we also know that they are capable of spending big in a window and keeping future spend to a minimum. This upcoming window could still yet swing either way, with sales only being made to reduce squad bloat for example.
There is definitely money available to spend this window from the borrowing facilities, and I suspect there is money for at least one purchase without sales being made to fund the rest.
I dunno, I think if we get CL we should be able to do some reasonable business. Not to last years level but even with that outlay we only had the second highest net spend in the league and the year before I think we were in profit.
I know it’s not as simple as that but as a rough idea of what we might be able to spend we should be in a comfortable place to do most of what’s needed with a couple outgoings helping balance the books.
Think we’ll need to be more strategic than last years approach of “buy most obvious and expensive option for each need” but that’s what Hughes earned his reputation on doing.
And with Mo and Robbo leaving that’s over £500k per week off the wage bill too.
None of the Spurs players interest me. Bowen is too old now. And should only be a squad player in any event.
That Mika Godts guy looks an ideal Gakpo replacement. Should be affordable as well. Add Mateus Fernandez and a left footed wide player for the right, bring back Elliott and Tsimikas, add Van Hecke and a decent right back and we’re in good shape.
Outs:
Salah
Robertson
Gakpo (£30m?)
Mac Allister (£40m?)
Alisson (£10m?)
Ins:
Fernandez (£50m?)
Godts (£30m?)
Van Hecke (£40m?)
Wide forward for the right (~£50m?)
RB (~£20m?)
Returns:
Elliott
Tsimikas
£110m net spend definitely doable
If we want a number 6 as well then sell Gravenberch.
