I think we can´t afford to be allocating money for squad places to be honest. He´d still cost 40 million maybe and potentially need replacing in a year or so as he hits early 30s.
We need to be buying first teamers and using youth for backup, such is the state of the team.
CB Van Hecke
RB - Kayode/Palestra
LB - Truffert
DM - Wharton/Sangare
MF - Anderson (unlikely) / Scott/ Garner/ Gray
AM - Gibbs-White
RW - Diomande
ATT- Bowen/Kroupi
Not all of them obviously, but here’s a realistic selection of what we might need and could get. I’ve tried to incorporate Iraola’s style of play into the choices, which means we will be high pressing and working like crazy. He uses four wingers every game because the starters are knackered after 60mins. High-pressing also means a very hard-working, physical and mobile midfield where we need additions badly. Bowen is getting on but is a stop-gap for Ekitike and an excellent player who grafts. We might even consider that Sunderland goalie too.
SELL - Jones (must). Sorry, I know he had his fans but the attraction is quite beyond me. He literally does nothing with the ball (except showing off a bit), doesn’t work hard and does not progress the ball like Iraola needs.
Alisson - It’s coming, let’s face it, but only if a top replacement is there.
Chiesa
Elliot
Love the look of Truffert, but he ain’t going to come with Kerkez being here and Kerkez will be far better under Iraola.
Also, Sangare competes with Anderson as a buy not Wharton, Wharton really isn’t a 6 in the true sense, more in the MF role.
But all good shouts, I would add Summerville to that as he would be cheap as well and is home grown, through being at Leeds.
Anderson is one I would love but Sangare is cheaper and maybe Scott over Wharton due to the price demanded.
I do feel that Jacquet will be trusted as the starter CB, but Schlotterbeck would be a great option as he can cover Virg, who shouldn’t be playing all the games he does.
van Hecke is the CB we should be targetting in my opinion, especially as he only has 12 months left on his contract which surely makes his price no more than £50-£60m.
Another option could be Fikayo Tomori. Bit older at 28 but also out of contract next year and probably cheaper than van Hecke. He was supposed to sign a new contract with Milan in February but that still hasn’t happened. Milan would hate to lose him but apparently he’s upset at missing the World Cup squad so playing in the Premier League will probably give him a better shot at the Euros.
