Who would you buy?

Definitely a player we could be looking at in 2 or 3 years time.

Why are we replacing Mane?

Because there was a vote on it mate and none of the sensible members of the forum got the memo.

Damn. Now Mané is off.

He’s crazy old you know.

He obviously isn’t, but I’m guessing it has to do with the not letting everyone grow old together line of thinking.

You think he’ll play forever? Current deal set to end in two years when he’ll be 31. Even if we extend that (and he might not agree to what we offer, pretty sure he’d consider himself within his rights to be one of out top earners) how much longer will he be here for? And even if he stays will both Salah and Firmino? Both similar ages with 2 years left currently too.

We need to bring in an upgrade to Shaqiri and Origi (one player to replace both) and our forward line will need refreshing sooner or later. It wasn’t my suggestion that Doku would be coming in to replace Mane but something similar will need to happen soon. As Bob said, let their legs go on someone else’s pitch.

Yeah I think he’ll play forever ARD, that’s what I said.

So you answer you’re own question, we are replacing Mane because he won’t play forever. Its just a question of how soon that needs to happen. I wouldn’t think, on ability, it would need to happen soon. But in context of contracts I can’t see all 3 of Mane, Salah and Firmino being extended past 2023 so one of them will need to be replaced soon. I actually believe Jota is the initial replacement though and what we really need is that 4th attacker who is good enough to challenge the others and not have too big a drop off when they play.

If he has another season like last… he will be gone sooner rather than later!

Why Mane though? Same goes for Salah and Firmino.

Too many of these discussions get hung up on x player replacing y. If we were to sign Doku this summer why would we have to commit to him being the sole replacement for Mane or Salah two years down the line if he’s not ready? We don’t.

We seem to have the only fanbase where 29 is deemed too old for a striker and by 30 their legs will have fallen off.

Ignoring, Mess (34), Lewi (32), Neymar (29), Vardy (34), Aguero (33), Aubameyang (33), Benzema (33), Suarez (34), Ronaldo (35)… Chelsea just signed Lukaku who is 29 next May, guess they are already lining up his replacement…

It’s like strikers hit their prime around 29/30…

Aye, I’ve banged my head at the wall countless times trying to point this out. I think people just like new and shiny toys to play with.

In all fairness though how many of them could play Klopps tactics in the Premier League week in week out? He puts a lot of hard running and work on his forwards for our tactics to work.

Or how many of them ever track back…!

Most of them if asked, it’s just they are so devastating at scoring they are allowed the freedom to do that.

Like Salah does work hard for us, but he is also given a lot of license to stay forward hence why Trent is constantly doubled up 2 v 1.

Salah works twice as hard (at least) as anyone on that list and only Firmino I think it was had more pressures leading to goals in the league than Salah last season or the season before. Because the work he does isn’t as obvious as Mane and Firmino (probably the two hardest working forwards on the planet) its often misunderstood that Salah doesn’t work hard, he’s still miles ahead of most other forwards. The line up of those you mentioned that would work best would be Vardy, Messi and Suarez but they’d struggle to match Salah let alone the other two and the intensity would mean they couldn’t keep it up game in game out week after week like our guys do.

Ok you’ve gone into hyperbole mode… I’m out…

Salah works twice as hard as Suarez? Did you read that on twitter?

not sure whether salah is better than suarez but I am sure Suarez’s attacking plays had more bite.

No doubt Mane will eventually need replacing, but hopefully not for another 3 seasons, at which point you’d want to see a phasing out.

Doku could be that player. I’d argue that the view that Doku in 3 years (at 22) won’t be ready to replace Mane, when looking at the stats as Mane was 24 when he joined is under appreciating what Klopp and his staff can do with a player. I’ve no doubt that had Mane come from Salburg straight the us (under Klopp) he’d have hit the levels we love at a younger age.

As of right now I’m with @Kopstar, get two young players in, a Camavinga and then Doku. Although I’d like to see what Taki can do, maybe for 6 months.
