Let’s tempt him
What if he gets injured though?
We have a top team no question. That said it can and certainly should be improved. We need another top forward and ideally another quality midfielder. Outside that there’s not much which needs doing. We could do with a better backup right back though. Plus there’s a few players which could be sold to help fund these acquisitions.
Priority has to be another forward who slots in with Mane and Salah. Firmino and Jota both good players but not clinical enough. Don’t think either are exactly elite.
The obvious players are Mbappe and Haaland. Mbappe seems destined for Madrid. While I’m sure all the big clubs will try for Haaland. There are other good players the club could look at however if required.
Now I see what the fuss about Ivan Toney is about.
Yeh, I didn’t know anything about him before this season but he’s looked very impressive.
Didn’t take you much to convince me, @GermanRed! Joking aside, I’ve watched Toney only in PL this season and his performances against Wolves and Liverpool got me thinking “how much would he cost if Watkins cost 30 million pounds or so”. I’m making the comparison also because Watkins was said to be frequently watched by Klopp’s staff.
Small sample but I got the impression that he’s a nuisance on the pitch, puts himself about, looks like a decent finisher. Also, I’m not a fan of tattoos in general but I love his haircut, so I’ll definitely be following him with interest this season, especially once I realise that our lads dropped the points to Brentford, while the likes of Man City and Chelsea routinely won against them.
I know some people rated Abraham on here but for me, from what I’ve seen (small bits admittedly), Toney is better and would be a better fit for us.
Klopp tried with Solanke but it was too early.
Links or comments by Klopp about Abraham, Bamford, Watkins, Toney…
I think we might go for a tall CF in the near future if it’s not too expensive.
That’s pretty much the only time I’ve taken notice of Toney, thought he was great. He won every header against Matip and Van Dijk but he’s mobile and hard working too.
I know we’ve been linked with Watkins, but for me he suffers the same issues as Werner. Limited skill set that I don’t think translates to the very highest level. Toney would definitely be of more use on yesterday’s viewing.
Only one game and all that, but very impressive still.
Will Ivan Toney be an upgrade over Origi??
No not if he plays an equivalent number of minutes.
Ivan Toney is great but I am surprised Mbeumo was not in the picture. He hustled and created space and runs and chances all night. And wasn’t he part of the trio of himself, Watkins and Benrahma which was one of best attacking trio in the Championship a couple of seasons ago? At just 22, if he continues this way for Brentford this season…would he be another ‘40mil Jota’ for us?
Mbeumo looks like he models himself as a cheaper version of Depay.
After Depay retires, will he call himself Depaid?
Decay.
