Think you’re missing the point. If it’s a player that’s better than OK the club who owns the player already know why we’d be Interested and the price would already be high.
No I got the point thanks. I’m sure we are aware of the cost of players like Barnes/Bowen and now is the time to try and get them before they establish themselves with England. That’s why Rice (similar level player) is talked about as £100mil… He’s a full international, but coming here he’d be coming in as a very good players to make the step to world class.
These are the kind of signings we will maybe struggle with now. Clubs see us coming in for players like this and they’ll either be more likely to try and keep or, if still willing to sell, likely to add significantly more on the asking price as its us. And there’s a very good chance the player will significantly improve if we buy them.
We will struggle how? What are you basing that on?
You think they’ll be significantly cheaper than Rice? I don’t. Why would you sell those players for less than say £70m if you’re Leicester/West Ham right now? And to us? You’d be even more scared of looking silly for selling early and add even more to the asking price.
Because we don’t tend to pay over what we have valued a player at. But we come in trying to buy a player now with our transfer success rate a club would be silly not to stick more on the price.
You can see it as a good thing or a bad thing that Liverpool FC has a price in their mind for almost every player they want and will not hesitate to walk away if it defers too much from our target price during negotiations. Over the years, there are not many times whether buying or selling that we are “forced” into a price that we do not agree with or at least on the surface. And this is important. If we are going in for a player like Barnes or Bowen, we will not be held to ransom like how Man City was for Grealish. There are not going to be many players in this world that Liverpool FC absolutely needs and will pay over the world for him. Certainly not Barnes or Bowen, even though it would be right to say, if they have a long contract, their clubs are not going to accept a “reasonable” amount for them. At current level, Bowen or Barnes are not going to be worth more than what we paid for Jota and furthermore the amount we paid for Jota was possibly higher because of the “installments” that were agreed by Wolves. But I do not see Leicester or West Ham agreeing to sell either of them for 40m or less unless their contracts are running down. On normal contract lengths, they would probably look for upwards of 50m.
thats a bit base though.
for a selling club, there are a fair few other factors. not worth bothering to mention becuase you and i both know them, but just becuase Liverpool come knocking, doesnt mean your asset ups its value…it may mean we see something in them that others dont…but that dont buy alot of value at the bargaining table.
now if a club like spurs just troll us like they used to a few years back, that might changes things up, but as it stands, if we go shopping for a Bowen or Barnes, not a hell of a lot changes for the selling club just because we are kinda good at this buying thing…
Because football works in the realms of realism not what goes on in your head.
You have zero examples of your “opinion”, yet there are lots to counter that; Just like when we bought Jota.
I explained the Jota example in the original post. There is still potential for that kind of transfer. But like with Jota it requires a club to make a pragmatic decision that they can’t iron out his creases. Also we don’t know Jota would have cost the same if someone else was doing the buying do we? Don’t understand why you’re being so confrontational over this?
So let me get this straight if you don’t rate a player (that’s ok btw) and others do (that’s also ok) their clubs will see us coming and make us pay through the nose for them?
But if you do rate the player their club would be “pragmatic” in negotiations?
You don’t see it??
No confrontation, I disagree with your post, I disagree Bowen / Barnes are “ok players”, I disagree with the notion that clubs will increase fees when we get involved.
It’s nothing about if I rate them. It’s the context of the situation at the club. I explained why I think the context of any Bowen/Barnes deals would mean only massive fees would be accepted;
I actually never described them as OK players. You’re merging my posts and points into one narrative and getting worked up over it.
I think they’re both good players, they’ve got many of the qualities we look for in players. But not sure I see how they would be used here. I don’t think they have the right qualities or goal returns to be used in a Salah/Mane style role. I’m willing to accept I’m wrong on that but just my opinion.
I like Bowen but he isn’t good enough for us. I say this because I don’t want to be buying a 5th choice attacker, I want the next forward we bring in to be a Jota, Mane, Salah type. A player who is in their early 20s and has had a few seasons of elite numbers who can go on and replace one of the front three in the future. Bowen isn’t that player. He might be a slight upgrade on Origi and Minamino but what’s the point when he will cost a fortune.
Fascinating game so far between RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund. Probably won’t get to watch second half live (recording though so watch another time) but nice to catch a full game instead of highlights.
Probably cost a fortune but Christopher Nkunku is living up to the hype and best player on the pitch. Could be an interesting player especially if we found ourselves needing a new false 9 or winger some time.
Dominik Szoboszlai as a possible young alternative with lots of potential. Benefit of him is a release clause, but not quite at the level of the £60m clause yet you’d be overpaying a bit if you believed in his potential but a player Klopp could make monstrous.
Dortmund not having a good game but Bellingham sparking every now and then but not quite happening for him/them.
No argument at all that I’m expecting a generational player in Bowen. I’m not!
Decent, and as a fifth choice, fine… at what price though?
And as a point of comparison, Nkunku over Bowen all day long for me, and without knowing availability of either, I suspect the price would be similar.
If we bought Bowen I’m sure he would be an upgrade on Origi and Minamino.
Not snobby about him at all, I just don’t think there’s value to be had there, unless he’s winding down his contract.
Prem teams have money. West Ham are looking at Europa, half an optimistic eye on higher. They won’t sell Bowen to us unless we make it worth their while, at which point other players will come into view, Nkunku being one.
Nkunku is super versatile as well and we know Klopp loves players like that. I don’t think we’ll get him but he would be high on my list for the summer.
I can see we being able to snatch Barnes with reasonable price. Leicester at this rate will have a shitty season this year - they will be vulnerable.
