Who would you buy?

He’s got the advantage of flexibility and is home grown.
Depends how much we think the two young rbs can contribute.

He’s not an attacking RB.

Homegrown he might be , but there’s his injury record to look at.

Yeah, I’m not sure about him, but I can see the arguments for keeping him as well as those for moving him on.

A year back , I would have argued he would be the starting CB (injuries permitting) for England.

Now I’m not sure.

I don’t think any of Gomez, Matip or Fabinho will leave.

Agree. Just don’t think Gomez will play a substantial role whereas VVD / Matip will… or Fabinho for that matter

Matip when he’s fit makes the case to being the best CB in our starting XI quite often and that includes now highly I rate VVD.

Just don’t see Gomez getting close to doing that.

Gomez is our second best right back. Pace, strength, covers it well.

In central defence he has dropped below the level where he was, but arguably he can get back to that again. Even if not, he is well worth keeping as a back up cb and rb.

If we are selling a central defender, Matip would be the one to go for me, due to age. We should not let Matip and VVD get old at the same time. Hopefully we buy a main man type, like Gvardiol. But even if we are priced out there, I’m sure there are good options to find someone who is big, strong, fast, good in the air, a good price, and quite a bit younger than Matip.

It wasn’t so much that Fabinho wasn’t good at CB (I think he was certainly serviceable when paired with an experienced CB), it was that when we ended up playing him and Hendo as a CB partnership it had clear weaknesses and worse, we no longer had a midfield of any useful kind in front of them.

That being said let’s never assume he can be the 4th CB again unless he makes a permanent position change like say Masheranno did for Barca.

I’d be very interested to see Gomez play the Robertson position for a few games personally.

Why go back to having wingbacks like Wan Bissaka. Gomez’s end product w.r.t crossing etc and his offensive gameplay is lacking.

Gomez is much better on the ball than Wan-Bissaka.

I’d also have Gomez comfortably above someone like Clyne too, I actually think he’s half decent in crossing positions.

Agreed. I think theres more possibility of that happening (and Tsimikas leaving) than any if the other three going.

Gomez would likely be much more comfortable at LCB in this formation than Tsimikas is.

Number 10 is still free, isn’t it … :sunglasses:

We haven’t even got him yet, and short arms T Rex trying the exact same shithouse tactic on him that he did to Virgil - 1:12 - 1:17

Give Mac the #8 shirt.

Gakpo can have #10, poor man’s Bergkamp.

I thought he was great at CB. The reason we needed Nat and Rhys was that Fabinho had to go back into midfield because we were fucked their too.

He will only cost 70m. FSG is stingy fuck.

Yeah but you’re not an impartial observer of midfielders-as-defenders.
