A routine customary comparison showed up Chelsea’s Malo Gusto as someone who offers close to what Bradley offers to us. And Gusto is Chelsea’s first choice wingback.
As you can see in the limited stats available, Bradley is better too.
Better defensively , better offensively. Offers more with the ball.
Chelsea is a top 4 club. We already have someone better or relatively equivalent there.
He’s 21 now so he should be past any growing injuries. Trent was regular by that age. Is he good enough? I’ve not seen anything to indicate that he isn’t. Is he Trent? No, but he us a fairly unique player.
When AOC was in the squad and struggling to nail a place down in midfield, I seem to recall TAA position was mooted as an option at the time by Jurgen… Obviously AOC never took the bait, or thought he was above being dovetailed into a less glamourous role…
If the same thought pattern could be applied, midfielder into a rampaging full back… Slob is struggling to get a starting place at the moment…!!!
Nah this is not fantasy football league is it… or…?
I’m also concerned about putting too much expectation on him. Trent was a generational talent at 21. Hopefully as RW states above, Conor will find his own path and be a great player for us for many years. Seems a level headed lad
In a world where Trent departs, and it very much looks on the cards, I would be quite happy with Bradley and Gomez as the main rotation option for right back.
Bradley looks to be a very good player indeed - stamina, pace, gets his foot in, gallops up the flanks to join in the attack, and he even has a nice little eye for goal. There’s a lot to like. If there are workload issues, Gomez is ready to see more action and we should be more than fine covering this between them.
What Trent gives us on the ball, at his best, will not be replicated. His range of passing makes him a bit of a unicorn. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t have a very capable replacement, as Slot refreshes the side as necessary.
While I’m on it, I would also like to see us sign Kerkez for the left back role. He looks like a very capable player indeed.
I totally understand if people are concerned about Bradley not being at the level needed to be Trent’s replacement should one be needed, but think sometimes there is a bit of a reluctance to acknowledge how experienced he will be by the start of next season.
Trent’s own progression is illustrative
Came into the team midseaon largely because of injuries and picked up a handful of appearances
Further established himself the following season splitting time with a more senior option (Gomez)
By the third season we were comfortable enough with Trent’s development that we jettisoned the established senior pro Trent had replaced (Clyne) and Trent was our established number 1
That is pretty much the path Bradley is on now. One big difference is he has far bigger shoes to fill. But in terms of experience, unless something goes pair shaped this season he will have a good number more appearances than Trent had by that time. I think he only needs about 10 more appearances for us this season to match Trent’s number. That is an amount he will surely get, but he also has 20 or so international caps already the more recent ones as captain.
If Trent leaves we will surely need another body. That could be a RB to compete with Bradley, it could be a CB to allow Gomez to be a utility option. But we should not worry about Bradley’s readiness or experience.
