how about Frimpong? Likely to be a lull after not retaining the title at Leverkusen, might be the time to go for him.
True, maybe he doesn’t but I do. I’d really like to see more athleticism from those positions and more balance in the side overall. Klopp achieved it in his own way with Robbo and Trent, even if Trent was, as Sweeting put it, a unicorn in terms of natural ability.
Given Slot’s insistence on winning duels, I wouldn’t be surprised if adding more athletic players in defence and midfield is precisely what he does this summer.
Julian Alvarez to Liverpool
Darwin Nunez to Atletico
I think it could make sense for all four parties.
Plays very high at Leverkusen, sometimes he’s their highest placed player on that right side.
He keeps getting “mentioned” with us so much that I fear we might be looking at him as rather a Salah replacement than a Trent one!
On a serious note, I don’t think we’ll go in for him. Probably best suited to a side that plays 3 at the back and he can have that freedom as a RWB.
Ola Aina at Forest currently hasn’t signed a new deal so is available on a bosman. Granted he’s older than you want but it’s perhaps what you need whilst Bradley develops.
What we may need Hughes to do this summer is find one or two Kerkez or Huijsen type deals for us like he did for Bournemouth. If we’re possibly looking at five or maybe six players (RB, CB, LB, DM, RW, CW) and we’ll really only likely be looking at recouping funds on Nunez, Tsimikas, Endo, Kelleher and Morton/Doak squad types, then we can’t be spending £40-£50m plus on all of them.
We also love a release clause so will no doubt be on the look out for under or fair value options.
Good shout on Aina especially with fitness concerns over Bradley.
Aina’s a good defender but he’s shockingly poor in possession
The Anti Trent
Goes against the Trent
…
But with Kerkez flying down the left maybe that’s what we’ll need.
Perhaps Aina isn’t the answer but we’ll have to be creative, or possibly do something short term somewhere, if the turnover of players is going to be high. Maybe it’s Bradley and Gomez there for a year and we do two CBs instead. Or we go after Jonathan David on a bosman to replace Nunez this summer and then spend big on a striker next summer so we can get the right back we want now.
I just can’t see us getting away with the “him or no one” approach if we lose all three contract guys as well as needing a LB, a CM and a CF. Slot just doesn’t seem to want to use enough of the squad type guys we have as it is.
Or we might decide Quansah can be a back up right back, based on a couple of decent showings, his need to see action, and the money being spend on other positions this summer? Joe Gomez, if he is fit and still here, obviously factors into that equation too.
Could be lots of permutations.
The ‘not buying anyone’ option is not viable for a club with our ambitions.
Hard to find a perfect solution. No players are perfect. But like what Klopp has shown previously, putting together a squad that can compensate each other can create a world class team. I think Slot will have to do that. There are fans who are naive to think it’s always buy players, the team will work itself out. The coaching team is far more important than what people give credit for. If Slot and his coaches can push their ideas out effectively to the squad then I believe even with Salah and VVD and Trent leaving, we will still be successful in the coming years.
Anyone watched Jonathon David enough to comment on what he would offer, Obviously must be the obligatory 10 times
Why on earth would Atletico agree to sell a goalscorer for a non-goalscorer?
if everyone is fit, everything is rosy. Shit happens when a player gets a pretty long layoff.
When TAA gets injured, Bradley comes on for TAA and Gomez is on standby.
The fucked up thing here is that Bradley himself is not made of steel with him having a few injuries but those injuries can get historically long.
When Bradley gets injured, we all turn to Gomez (whose injury record is rivalling Thiago and Keita at this point) where Gomez’s breakdown is always not too far away.
Gomez breaks down inevitably, Bradley gets rushed back from injury with TAA in a standby position.
Bradley inevitably breaks down as well, leading TAA the only fit senior RB left.
A situation where there is supposedly 2 backups ( 1 being the number 2 backup, the other being the emergency backup) turned out to be 0 backups in the end due to the backups themselves not being physically reliable.
TAA gets injured due to overplaying and the whole right side shuts down completely.
It is somewhat negligent to assume that Gomez’s body can withstand the rigours of top flight football when data from the past 4 season suggests that his physical injuries are minimally at least 20 days…
We’ll have to see what happens. I don’t think he is quite the chronic case you make out, and I think he was rushed back early for the FA cup game.
The main thing is that I don’t think it’s business we need to do, especially in a summer where we stand to lose a fair few players.
Yes, but how else are we going to win the transfer window???
I think we can confidently say that we will not be going into a season with Bradley, Gomez, and Quansah as our RB rotation. Especially not in a situation in which Virgil leaves
GK
Kelleher out
Mamardashvili in
LB
Tsimikas out
Kerkez in
CB
one new CB in (Matip replacement)
CM
Endo out
new CM in (Thiago replacement)
CF
Darwin out
new attacker in
This + Trent, Virgil and Mo extending their contracts would be a squad able to go for the Q
Unfortunately we are not living in dreamland.
That was Quansah.
