ADRIÁN San Miguel del Castillo: 2020/21

You can’t tell me this is the 2nd best keeper we have at the club. If the youngsters aren’t at the required level (and how the fuck are we going to find out if they’re not even played in the League Cup?) then we desperately need a better back up.

I’m not a fan of selectively editing mistakes into a compilation like that. De Gea’s Would look awful and he’s first choice.

I think the difference with now and last season is we knew Alisson was injured and as such Adrian (and the team) had time to prepare with him starting. He came on when we were 3-0 up and cruising. He then had the training to get himself settled.

What he has shown is he cannot be dropped into the team at short notice, which if a no.2 can’t do that what is the point of him?

Certainly not helped by us still playing a high line and putting him under pressure in the first 5mins.

If I’m honest I think that’s the worst I’ve seen him, he didn’t seem to be there at all, the saves he attempted to make on the two that went wide reminded me of Saturday amateur football. As for that save that led to that corner, that was just odd, kind of the jokey one you make in warm up.

I know he made the mistake in Ath Madrid and has made mistakes elsewhere but he looked very disjointed yesterday. Wouldn’t surprise me if he came down with Covid-19.

I agree, I read elsewhere that his head was half gone after Atletico and the first goal last night just smashed through the other half. I totally agree with this.

If you have a keeper whose made a few brainfarts and is a bit nervous, fuck me don’t hospital pass him in the first few minutes. Thats a big failing of the coaching staff for me for not telling the players to play 10 yards deeper, ease Adrian into the game, then push on.

But again I repeat myself I think collectively our ego has grown beyond us, we turned up expecting to play our normal way (with different players) and Villa would just roll over.

It’s probably not helped by not having the likes of Henderson on the pitch who wouldn’t let that kind of thing go on.

And also the fact the last two games have been stunning.

I’ve always defended Adrian against overly harsh criticism, also after the game against Atletico, but this is too much. Klopp has to act now and replace him before the derby comes up. Otherwise, we’ll lose that game too, and the others after that until Alli comes back. Nobody can come back from this imo, and the other players don’t trust him, that much is obvious.

Recall Kelleher from loan if judged reliable enough, or if not, buy someone else. Unfortunately, Adrian’s time with us is finished. Yesterday’s performance was the last nail in the coffin.

Someone pointed out that having Adrian is like having Kiev Karius all the time. He might do some things right here and there but he will frequently get random things incredibly wrong for no understandable reason whatsoever. I think it’s an assessment that sounds and comes across extremely harsh… however I’m not sure I can argue it’s accuracy… Was happy with him at one point but back up keeper is now probably one of the only parts of our squad not perfect. If Alisson is going to be a player who misses lots of games we might need a better number 2. Not easy to sort though. The defence had a shocker but would they have had one if Alisson was behind them? Or would that assurance, confidence and command coming from behind helped them sort themselves out?

Definitely. It would have gone on very differently. Adrian’s early mistake set the tone for the rest of the game. This shouldn’t serve as an excuse for the other players, who were all gash and deserve every criticism they get. But Adrian is a complete liability these days. He’s not the same goalie who performed well during his early spell with us. I’ll always respect what he did then, but since that time, he has devolved into a calamity and can’t be trusted anymore.

I disagree about replacing him. I think the structure needs adjusting when he plays to have the defense sit 10 yards deeper as he is not a natural sweeper keeper, so you can’t expect him to play high up the pitch like Allisson does.

@aussielad, I agree, but if his game doesn’t suit our system, it’s one reason more to quickly get rid of him.

Kelleher is at the club still, he was on the bench last night.

…wondering what the fuck has to happen for him to get a game.

Ah, I thought he was on loan in the Netherlands or somewhere. Well then, time to get him in. It can’t get worse than with Adrian, and at least, he’s on a learning curve.

I don’t know whether Kelleher would be any better than Adrian. I mean, it’s difficult to know isn’t it given he isn’t given any games? What I do know, however, is that I’d much rather see a youngster making the occasional mistake than watching Adrian fuck up time, after time, after time. It causes our team to collectively shit themselves. At least having a youngster in goal might make the team do their best to look after him and, if he makes a mistake, to make sure that their heads don’t go down so as to give him encouragement. With Adrian…they know there’s no fucking point in saying shit like, “don’t worry, it can happen to anyone” because they know that fuck ups are not isolated incidents with him.

I have never been on the @Dutch side of the fence but at the same time I and a few others raised concerns about him as far back as the Newcastle game at home last season. As well as the major mistakes that he makes, which are many and varied, his mobility is also an issue. His footwork and reaction times are extremely slow and as such it gets him into positions where actually making the save is then not possible at the worst or makes save look more difficult than they really were which inexplicably results in ‘‘ooooh, what a world class save’’ etc. The general consensus to these concerns were ‘‘well he’s a number two so what can you expect’’.

We got a hammering yesterday and the whole team must take responsibility but some of those goals are saved by a decent keeper to keep us in the game. His footwork and reaction times make it look like goals are at times unstoppable but a keeper like Henderson or Romero stops some of those. He’s pretty darn awful and somehow has managed to collect a fistful of trophies in the process despite that.

I’m guessing he drinks too much coffee as he looks like his brain is going 2 thousand mph stressing at the simplest thing, jittery.

The look of …

I still maintain that with a keeper as dominant and established in his position as Alisson, Adrian is about the best you can expect.

All the teams with really good number twos, have got question marks over their number ones in some way. Maybe age, or ability, or a suspicious they might want to move on.

Put it this way there is no sales job that could be done on a really good keeper to convince them to come to LFC. You can’t intimate that if they do well they’ll challenge Becker. You can’t suggest they can win the shirt. You can’t give them the nod that Alisson is getting off in a year, or convince them to patient until he retires.

This is the problem with having a world class established number one. City have also got a really good number one, and their reserve keeper is a lot fucking worse than Adrian.

Where this starts to get really interesting is around Alisson’s injury record, which is quietly becoming a major issue. If he is going to be unavailable for ten games a season, then that’s a package (along with the domestic cups and hopefully a couple of CL dead rubbers) you can sell to a better reserve keeper. It’s all nods and winks and ‘I can’t promise, but…’, but you can see how coming to Liverpool starts to look a bit more appealing to a good keeper.

So which overseas player aren’t we going to register then if we don’t move on one of the 18 non-home grown players? Any candidates?
