Alex OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN: 2021/22

We need to play Jones and Elliott as they are the future really and Jones has impressed me the last two appearances seems to have reacted well to whatever was said (thankfully Klopp keeps this stuff behind doors).

I would suspect all that has been said is concrete advice on areas for improvement. Everything I’ve read or heard about Jones suggests he is keen to work on his game and improve, so not too worried about how he might react. His being out of the side this season has largely been due to freak injury etc. We’ve seen games where other players have been left out of the squad when most are fit.

Personally I didn’t think I’d was doing much wrong until he was subbed

Was weird because Elliott was positioned in the forward line, yet the average positions map at HT showed that it was him more in midfield and Ox forward. Perhaps it was depending who is in and out of possession. We didn’t get much from those two. Luckily Gomez coped well, otherwise we would’ve struggled more down that right side in general.

Way I saw it is we didn’t get anything, he didn’t do anything that as risky but didn’t really impose himself to do anything well, it reminded me of the Norwich game and now that’s two games.

He was good first half. One of our better performers. Went downhill fast in the second along with the rest of the team. He really needs a run of games if he’s ever going to find form and he’s not going to get a run here unless we suffer another injury crisis like we did pre-Christmas. You don’t have to be a genius to work out he’s not going to get a contract extension and will probably move in the summer but I don’t think we’ll be short of offers.

Needs to be replaced in the summer.

Think Carvalho will be his replacement.

You can see that happening and why it would make sense for all involved.

Ox gets a chance to get back on track somewhere he’ll play more. We get to replace him with someone who’s an exciting talent but won’t expect to play every week or be paid anywhere close to what Ox does. We also probably end up with a net profit on those two transfers. Carvalho comes to a club where he’ll get chances but also the patience to develop his career at a club that aren’t going to get be in a relegation battle.

My only slight worry is that that would leave us with Milner as the senior statesman, Fabinho Hendo and Thiago as the preferred starting three and three very young players, all who’ll need game time and patience to continue their development. The only bridge between those and one you’d say would be in his prime would be Naby as things stand.

Yep, this is the only wrinkle. It puts an enormous amount of responsibility on Naby. Not just to be available, but to play in a way that helps those kids through the games they’re playing together.

But, if the stories are right that Minamino, Origi are leaving, and Ox and Millie do, then surely there has to be more bodies coming in even on top of Carvallho.

He will leave on a free in 23, 99% sure he won’t be sold.

The way the club has stood by him
would be nice if we got some money for him though

How come? We want to retain him or no potential buyer willing to pony up the cash?

Admittedly it’s reading a lot into his reactions to being subbed at the moment but he really doesn’t look that happy with how things are going. Probably as much frustration at himself as it is Klopp/the being subbed stuff but it’s the first sign of discontent we’ve seen from anyone in a while.

It might be a long shot but he must have aspirations of getting back into contention for the England squad. Qatar may come too soon for him but if he holds one iota of hope to be on that plane he needs consistent game time and performances from the start of next season. Even if he’s looking at Euro 2024, playing a bit part role for us for another year isn’t going to do his hopes much good.

Combo of that, and I suspect that he would rather play a bit part and leave on a free.

Mario Götze saying Klopp was interested in bringing him to Liverpool in 2017 but he decided to go back to Dortmund.

I am sure Klopp was always a fan of Ox but suddenly it looks like he wasn’t first choice.

Probably doesn’t make a big difference. Both have always been injury prone players.

Götze clearly the bigger talent but the metabolic disorder did cost him almost two years of his career.

Perhaps it was at the time when we knew Coutinho wouldn’t stay much longer. It was exactly that summer when the whole Barca thing started more seriously.

It depends, sometimes it’s not maybe such a like for like replacement, but the plan changes to a different player.

Jorginho was our and City’s first holding midfield target before he went to Chelsea and we got Fabinho. City wanted Sanchez and Virgil also, but didn’t want to go that far with the fee.

AOC wasn’t second choice to anyone, the recruitment team really wanted him. I very much doubt it was an either/or situation with Gotze/AOC. Perhaps Gotze/Coutinho but even that I’m sceptical of. I just place little store in Gotze’s claim here, at least as to the degree/strength of any actual interest. I would have thought that even if there was an admiration from Klopp there would have been an acceptance that any deal would have fallen apart at the medical.

Any team willing to take him off our hands in the summer?

Villa? West Ham? Newcastle?

A bit of revision is happening with Ox, he took a bit of time like most of our signings but he was a key member of the squad before he got injured.
