One excerpt from Lallana’s talk about MacA (which otherwise is very complimentary):
“He had to battle tough moments here at the beginning. He’s a very introverted, shy guy.”
Not that I’m too concerned about that, he’s a relatively young lad after all. Still, he’ll need to stamp his authority right from the start, especially as a midfielder. LFC isn’t Brighton.
I dunno mate - i took that from Adam to mean that for a a 22 year old coming to a new country etc, he had challenges at the start - pretty normal for any young lad moving country etc. I didn’t take it as anything more than that. He did reference learning the language too (not easy!). He will of course have to learn another language (scouse). He’s now two years older, two years more experienced in living in England etc.
Maybe in a year or two’s time we are saying that Darwin had to battle tough moments in the beginning.
It will depend on more things. Sure we have (had) extroverts who have struggled at least at the beginning and introverts who hit the ground running. Other than that, nobody knows how he will do initially.
Alexis, what a special player and a special, special person. It took him a little time to settle. Learning the language. His English is incredible now and he’s picked it up.
He had to battle tough moments here [Brighton] in the beginning. Coming over in lockdown; adapting to the culture and the language. He’s a very introverted, shy guy. I always went out of my way to make sure he was ok because I know he was such a wonderful person. He just needed time. Sometimes you just need time to adapt to your surroundings: the shit weather, Brighton, the language, the league, the relentlessness of the league.
It’s a classic case of things seemingly being problematic, when in reality it’s all very normal stuff once you read the full quotes.
If that is true it’s great price for a quality player in todays market. He’s not going to single handedly win matches. But he’s a round peg for a round hole and will undoubtedly improve our team.
Edit: on a different note, if true, much respect to him for not running down his contract and leaving Brighton without a penny from his new club but also respect to Brighton for not being excessive in their demands when it comes to the height of release clause.
More than anything, I admire how well the clause was kept secret for a good while. Between him signing that contract and now there’s been a good individual and collective season, he’s been a World champion, it was obvious that he would be leaving, etc. But who knows what else, apparently it was not a classic clause.
Who cares, he’s ours, quality transfer, f*ck Mason Mount.
