Our midfield trio Gini-Hendo-Millie in it’s pomp never scored a lot of goals. Yet, we won everything with them in the side, and then with Fabinho too, who isn’t a great goalscorer either.
What we need is one or two really reliable players on physical level, with high consistency (and of course with the necessary game intelligence to be able to play in our side). That’s what we’ve lost since two/three years and need to recover.
(No idea if Mac A. is a such a player or not, but anyway, I like the idea of having a Mac in the side! )
If it is with Ugarte, who tackles everything that moves; and/or an athletic midfielder who runs all day and does a bit of everything, the point being, teams no longer cut through us… then bring it on.
The price will be what it will be, and I leave the worrying to the money men at the club, but I still hoped for a bit of a bargain on him, given his contract situation and gift to Brighton in signing a new deal and not going on a Bosman.
Sporting have a good reputation for selling well, but even with that the prices being thrown about for Ugarte of 60+ would represent a big jump on what they’ve got for their in demand players in recent years.
No of course not, but we can make a pretty intelligent guess that he’d be played in the midfield and probably one of the number 8 slots. I very much doubt Klopp would be looking to vastly change style/formation next season and build this around Mac Allister. Anyway, maybe I missed your point, but I can’t think of a single thing Klopp could ask Mac Allister to do that would make me think £70m was a bargain.
Proper midfielders, actually not so much, especially with a few who are likely to depart.
Fernandez, Kovacic (last year of his deal), Kante (contract expiring this summer, but it seems like he might sign a new one), Gallagher, Loftus-Cheek (last year of his deal). Chukwuemeka and Santos at a push, don’t know how much they count on them for next season.
But one would think we have a better chance of attracting Mac than Chelsea.
