My second favorite player in the Klopp Era. The favorite being Milner.
He has struggled badly this season. When he plays you get reminded of his quality, but he has reached a point of far too often being too slow to spot danger and being directly responsible for a goal we had no business conceding. He just simply hasnt been solid enough to play even the sort of back up role he has had this year.
Maybe part of this is Slot and he’s do better under a manager with a more coherent side that isnt struggling in so many other areas. Maybe he’d argue that he’s been so infrequently that its tough to stay sharp and he needs to be used more often. Either way it feels like the way the season has gone it is the right time. I say that as someone who has adored him from day 1.
I think the other thing I commented on in the summer that is probably even more relevant now is as your role in the team changes how you think about your role off the pitch and behind the scenes also changes. The hard nosed critical skipper holding everyone to account is a powerful force when he’s central to the team’s performances. The exact same energy put into a group where that player is now only getting rare sub appearances and cup games will often be received negatively. Robbo was the charismatic jokster, something that can come off as a distraction from the real work when the role is being acted out by a squad player. That adaptation is tough. Sometimes players suffer and become lesser because they just feel really uncomfortable with how their interactions with their team mates have changed. Some players don’t adapt and start becoming a negative influence and have to be forced out, as famously happened with Hughes after losing the captaincy and as Klopp did proactively with Hendo because he saw it coming.
Mourinho once said this about Andy Robertson:
“I am still tired just from watching Robertson. He makes 100m sprints per minute. Absolutely incredible. And these are qualities.”
just think…
when Robbo signed for us he was Moreno’s understudy! ![]()
Agreed. Andy knows it’s time to move on and 3-4 years at Celtic winning things will really fill a childhood/start of career desire and be a good way to bow out.
This is bullshit. He’s still a better footballer than Kerkez.
Ten years older btw, and not necessarily a better player currently, just a player with a better record.
We all love Robbo, for the obvious reasons, but Kerkez is the future, and he will be great too. LB is the most difficult position to fill, because there’s a minority of left footers, and a minority of people who want to play In defence.
Robbo is better on the ball and going forward but isn’t a patch on Kerkez defensively 1 v 1 due to his age
Andy Robertson: Thank you very much #YNWA
Reminds me of that saying:
“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog”
Kerkez has definitely improved over time this season, and mind you a very difficult season for a new player to be in where everyone is underperforming. However, he has not shown to be anywhere near the standards of Robertson and that is the truth. He could be but it’s not wrong to say that Robertson could still do the same job now as what Kerkez is showing now but we got to move on and give potential LB for many years to come to improve and shine.
Kerkez has shown improvement with time, but I’m still not convinced he will be great for us long term.
We have definitely lost a fantastic man. Everyone will miss his character that is soo important in team sports. It remains to be seen if our squad will/can develop others who can do the job of those Milner’s and Robertson’s.
A role model that a player like Kerkez could have really benefited from if he had stayed and played more.
Forcing him out seems like a mistake to me. Team and man management is so important. Now we have to find another left back and some real character.
He is a hell of a loss and will be felt keenly..The jury is still out on Kerkez, hope he makes it!
Kerkez is showing he’s a good player however only time will tell us what we actually have.
I’m worried about the character of the squad the loss of Robbo is another nail in the coffin from what I can see on this point.
We seem to have more and more shruggers in the team as time goes on. Watching VVD and Gravenberch shrugging every time something goes wrong is starting to really annoy me.
At least we have Szoboszlai and Macca who at least react differently even if it’s not intelligently or constructively.
Like Moreno when he came in? ![]()
