Yes before Jurgen got too much say
I’ve been in the Slot out camp since the ManC loss when I found myself kinda indifferent instead of being furious. It all felt expected and even though I wanted Slot to turn it around I haven’t found much excitement watching our games since then. Even when the results got better, the end result seemed inevitable to me - Slot should go for the sake of the fans, the players and thus the club.
However I don’t think Slot is the biggest problem of the club. Certainly not for the future of the club…
We have two injured players out in Isak and Bradley (not counting Leoni as he’s a kid for the future) + Konate out (who’s been terrible and is out of contract at the end of the season anyway).
Then I look at the bench today and I see two players that I think are good enough to make a difference (Ekitike and Jones) + a talanted kid for the future (Rio) + Robbo who will leave pretty soon + a few players that are not Liverpool level.
Then looking at the starting lineup. Salah looks finished and won’t be in the club after next season, if not earlier. Virgil looks worse by the day and won’t be in the club after next season, if not earlier. Gomez is always injured and doesn’t seem like he’ll be here long term. Ali will be gone before the end of next season as well.
And then…
Gakpo looks a bit crap. Maca looks a bit shite at the moment, after looking world class. Frimpong and Kerkez blow hot and cold. Gravy was great for half a season and inconvicing for the rest of his time at the club.
So count me a bit depressed because I look at our squad and I think after next season (if not earlier), we need a lot of new players - players that will push the train, not bench warmers like Endo, Chiesa etc. Fast forward a year and a half and I think most of the current players won’t be at the club. We need to be very, very careful at the business we do and that makes me even more worried, seeing the job Hughes has done so far…
Who would have thought that our best performers last year would be so out of sorts, not Hughes or Arne.
One area I disagreed with, which is great in hindsight, is paying huge wages to ageing stars.
It’s not about whether this is “all Arne’s fault” or not. Regardless of who carries the blame, the only viable option right now is to sack him. Bringing in ten new players simply isn’t realistic.
And honestly, most people would agree that the starting eleven tonight should be good enough to beat Bournemouth. A new voice, some actual structure, and a coherent game plan would probably make a massive difference.
We’re still in the mix for Champions League places, we’ve got the FA Cup ahead of us, and we all know what kind of magic can happen in the Champions League…
Time to pull the plug, FSG.
For me , Jürgen is a prophet.
I cannot say anything against him. It would against my religion ![]()
No one is perfect but he comes the nearest to it.
I was unsure on Xabi, but look at where Bayer Leverkusen were when he took over 17th.
Plus I saw an Adam Cleary piece in what he was doing at Real Madrid and apart from the aresholes he was coaching he had them tactically sound.
In hindsight it looks bad but could you imagine winning the title and letting two of the bedrocks of that success leave on free transfers along with Trent as well?
Not only are you adding two more to the huge swathe of changes in the summer, if the season had gone like this without them here, even if they weren’t tearing up trees elsewhere, the pitchforks would have been out for everyone involved.
At least with Salah we’ve probably protected some value should he move on in the summer. And no matter how bad Virg is he’s still our best and most reliable CB. Perhaps that says something about our succession planning or lack there of.
We did good business in the summer. Most of the new players we bought are starting to come good and I expect they will give good value for years to come, after a period of integration. As it happens we are building a new team. Klopp’s parting gift was a new midfield. It probably needs one more, a defensive midfielder who can pass well might be just the ticket. Adam Wharton.
We got new fullbacks, and now we need to look at the central defence. We got new strikers and now we need to look at the wing/s.
A good summer and I fully expect us to be back at it next season, challenging for the Prem.
That probably won’t be with Slot, as it looks like his race is nearly run. I’m gutted for him, as he won the league and many circumstances have conspired against us this season. But it probably needs a new leader, and with a guy like Alonso apparently waiting for the nod, it might come sooner rather than later.
Yeah having watched today, I’m not convinced it’s the business we did last Summer either. It’s something else entirely which isn’t a good look for Slot.
From the squad I can only think of 3 players that are playing at a level we expect of them.
We all know what direction this is heading in. It’s been inevitable for a while now and I see no point in continuing with this until the summer. The club should be doing everything in their power to get Alonso in now before it’s too late and he’s convinced to go elsewhere.
Big questions need to be asked of Hughes and Edwards as well. They have overseen this sharp downturn in fortunes and continue to sit on their hands as the squad becomes more and more depleted. Tired of our hierarchy being sound with us completely chucking away a season every couple of years.
Hughes has to answer questions on the CB situation, however as someone else said this squad has shown and is good enough to not keep churning these turgid performances. They’ve even shown it this season.
He looks lost. The players look lost.
The football is a complete mess.
I don’t mind sticking with a struggling manager if I can see where its heading or what the issues are. Klopp had spells where he struggled but we still looked like a well coached team and the problems were easily identified.
No one wants to see a title winning manager lose his job, but it’s time we thanked Arne for his contribution and moved on.
Guess what? Gapko started today, and it’s not a “D” but a “L”. ![]()
This video was interesting. Right at the end of the video it shows where we are in this evolution of football.
If that is the evolution of football, then I have to ask have we been building the wrong type of team, and do we necessarily have the players to play that way? And how long and how many hundreds of millions till we can transition from here to there?
Evolution of football?
Absolute tosh…
Yeah, I’ve had enough now. I even turned over to watch Gladiators instead. Fucking terrible. It’s just so bloody easy to play through us and that’s on Slot.
I understand that most of their work is in the background. But there’re times when it is necessary to lay out the vision or restate it…
I think it’s not good enough to leave this simply to the manager’s pressers…
And yet if Van Dijk deals with a hopeful punt into our area like any competent CB should do we don’t concede the first 2 goals and Gomez doesn’t get crocked.
I take your point but a lot of these players need to take a good look at themselves and VVD is right up there.
