Arne Slot - Head Coach

“Apparently I’ve done so many things wrong.”

Its only becoming apparent to you now? It took boos from the home supporters - and not for the first time this season - to reach that conclusion?

Whether it’s arrogance or ignorance, Slot doesn’t do himself any favors with the way he reacts to negativity sometimes. Reminds me of the whole “2 titles in 30 years” bit he had earlier this season.

I think he was being sarcastic, which it’s even worse.

If the guy thinks he can become a smartarse to the fans, there will only ever be one winner in that argument

I think much of it may simply be a second language issue, with people looking to jump on what he says because they are upset with the football being played/ results.

For example if that bit you’ve quoted is from the pre match interview @RedWhippet has copied in the match day thread, then i think his comment is meant as a defence of the fans booing him not a defence of himself (our fans dont boo without good reason).

Liverpool Echo:

🗣️ Arne Slot: "When I came here I was told this club was different and the fans will support the manager for a long time. If it’s true (the fans are restless), I don’t feel it at all.

“I must have done a lot of things wrong then that’s never a nice feeling to have.”

"I did something wrong with the team when we won the league and some things which I did wrong in hindsight.

All the decisions I’ve made are to help the team win."

Many managers sound like that close to the end.

I’m sure he believes this but sometimes you have to get out of your own way or have the decision taken out of your hands.

That may be true, but the word “apparently” implies that it wasn’t evident previously, which I find difficult to rationalize. Maybe it’s a second language issue, but I won’t presume a deficiency in that regard as his grasp of English is quite good. Nevertheless, I’d be more inclined to afford him the benefit of the doubt if he hadn’t made other comments over these last few months which have come off as defensive.

Tell you what. You go do a press conference in Dutch, and see if you get every word spot on.

There was a telling part of the piece that he, Hughes and Hogan did where Hogan said me and Slot are the here and now and Hogan is the long term and it did sort of suggest there maybe not uncertainty than looked it.

I don’t think any of the signings Hughes be seen as bad ones if he does go. I would assume Edwards is the long term like Billy Hogan

not a problem specially if i’d been taught Dutch all through my school years
then lived and worked in the Netherlands for near 2 years…

I don’t speak Dutch. I do speak three languages and I come from a family of immigrants, so I can understand how language barriers can lead to misunderstandings. But I think it’s silly - and infantilizing - to assume that he didn’t mean what he said because of a language barrier. Especially when his grasp of the language has been quite good otherwise. If he clarifies that point in his next presser, fine by me. Otherwise, I’m going to assume that he meant what he said.

He’s probably like Guardiola and plenty others. The worse his team play, the worse his English gets.

Where did he use the word ‘apparently’ is that from a separate interview as it’s not in the segment @sandsoftime or @redwhippet have quoted?

It’s from the headline of this report.

Maybe you’re particularly naturally gifted, but most humans will not get every word spot on with a few years of school and 2 years of living in a country. Especially since a lot of the people he spends most of his time with aren’t native speakers either.

in the Netherland English is a compulsory subject and teaching begins at the age of 10!

Pretty much the same in Germany. Doesn’t make most people absolutely perfect in English.

The English they learn in the Netherlands is on a much higher level.

Slots english is much better than Klopp when they arrived.

I agree, but I think that’s more to do with e.g. them watching more stuff in English.
