Carrick was the perfect combination of experienced, familiar with the players, but low profile enough that the pressure to do an Ole and give him the job if he over performs would be low.
Gerard is our closest but the clam our to give him the job will be through the roof if he wins his first game
It’s also a fitness issue. In fact, it probably has more to do with the lack of conditioning than anything else.
I cannot believe that the same players that won the league last season and have proven their worth on multiple occasions can’t be bothered for most matches, as champions no less. When they get outrun in 26 out 30 league fixtures, that suggests that they can’t make the effort that is required. On the rare cases that they do, this is what happens afterwards, especially after a short turnaround.
As for the poor conditioning, while it may be tempting for some to attribute it solely to Slot and his staff, there’s no way that a title winning manager in 2 different leagues prepares his teams so poorly during the summer and he still ends up having success. I’m guessing that even though the preseason started just a few days later due to Jota’s tragic death, not much if anything was being done for a good amount of time, while everyone got to grips with what had happened.
This would also explain why FSG are seemingly willing to give Slot the benefit of the doubt and why Van Dijk declared very early that the season was going to be a very hard one.
I said it weeks ago: Slot has taken all the fun out of the matches for me with his slow-paced style of play. It’s something I’ve never experienced before.
I didn’t bother checking the start (don’t have the tnt sports package) and only remembered to check the score after a while. Saw the 2-1. Hardly any emotional response.
Just a knowing slow dull acknowledgement.
Without passion and then active and passive support football teams would cease to exist.
At this juncture, Slot isn’t the only one but pretty much the single most significant cause of this.
Sacking him now would be perfect timing, well not quite perfect as that would’ve been about 4 months ago, but the next perfect. Heading into an international break, gives the new man bit of time to meet his team and have a few days on the training ground before we go again.
I’m sure Arne is desperate to get away to Ibiza or somewhere anyway, I say we do him a favour and give him the rest of the season off for his outstanding work.
I don’t think that he will be gone before the season ends. I wouldn’t be surprised if an agreement has been reached to shake hands on a mutual consent departure in the summer.
It would be madness to give Slot a new contract at this point, and I can’t see him wanting to commit to Liverpool any further without one.
If the former was the case, we’d probably just do it now and move on. I don’t see why he would agree on a mutual termination, it’s not similar to Rafa’s situation in 2010 after 6 years in charge.
I had no issue starting the same team apart from Mo, but his unwillingness to use subs no matter their age, when it is obvious players are tired no matter, really pisses me off.
Also, as a coach what are his directions to Gakpo from a coaching point of view, because all he is, is head down and try to run with the ball and shoot!
