Definitely agree with this. That fact that he goes back to it over and over again signifies a manager who feels like his position is under threat - which, to be fair, it probably is.
I am not disputing that, all I was suggesting is that a lot of us, myself included are being Romanticist and expecting Alonso to be successful on the basis of attachment.
You can argue that Alonso managed the Team whilst Arbeloa is being managed by the Team and I would probably agree with the majority of your points. But that doesn’t prove anything. Who is the better Manager? The one who is sacked as a result of trying to Manage or the one who is content with the Team managing itself, when they have similar records.
To be clear, I am in no way trying to slate Alonso, I love the man. If you asked me to name my preferred Manager for next season it would be Alonso, hands down.
All I am trying to do is manage our expectations. ![]()
I like Smith, Wilson, Pitt-Brooke and Horncastle. The rest are yeah, a bit meh.
The waffle from Slot looks like he knows he is on very thin ice and trying to prop it up, however,he wont do that by using a steam pipe.
He has almost certainly lost the dressing room, lost a big chunk of the supporters, who, he should know make Anfield the cauldron it can be.
Maybe he could try shutting up, but it may be a bit late for that.
As I was scrolling down and saw the “yeah but I think you’ll find…” I was genuinely hoping you posted the said quote because it is clever humour. Fair play, it did tickle me ![]()

Not sure that is correct, a quick google shows that Alonso averaged 2.24 pts per game, Arbeloa 2.17. Xabi 5 losses came over 28 games, Arbeloa’s over 18?
Happy to be corrected at time of post.
Asking in good faith, do you have any general thoughts on the points I raised? For discussion purposes maybe?
On whether Slot has a chance of turning it around next season.
Yes definitely. Possible but it depends.
- We have to concede that this season really started on the wrong foot, key players missing a lot of pre-season, Jota’s death, huge player turnover, huge injury crisis, etc. Things during the season come relentlessly and there is very little opportunity to do a hard “reset” if you got things wrong from the beginning.
- What we should have seen though was some small improvement. But perhaps under the pressure of poor results, criticism and an internal war with Salah… mentally our Club and players are all worn out. I.e., need for a hard reset which is not available.
A new season does signal a new beginning, new preparation, etc. So yes, there is a chance that the Slot of 24/25 resurfaces.
Equally though, he could have destroyed his relationship with the squad and will not be able to get the best out of them anymore. In which case, leaving Slot till next fall may in fact be a disaster when the best managerial options are not available.
Thus, from a risk perspective I would change in the summer unless the careful assessment of what went wrong reveals areas where if addressed gives us a really convincing chance of competing at the top next season.
…
On Slot’s interviews… it is hard for anyone not to defend themselves from unfair criticism. Yes, Slot does deserve a lot of criticism and he is doing very poorly. But the personal attacks and unfair comparisons are still well more than he deserves.
Forget about team imbalance. Just from ballpark squad value:
Spent 450, recouped 220 = 230 and loaned out another 40M player in Elliott = 190m. Jota, a 55/60M player was lost and our 100m RB left for 10m
Our 30m CB was out for the season since his first start. Our record signing Isak 125m has never been match fit or injury free. And there have been many other injuries above that.
Slot has really played this season with about 110m less available to him after our “record spend”. Add on the decline of Salah which has been enormous.
So… having our own fans put the weight of a 400m+ spend on the club, well… I understand opposing supporters doing this but ourselves? We were very unlikely to ever be nearly as good as last year given what happened.
Given the circumstances, I’m not surprised that we are where we are (i.e., fighting for a CL spot). But the manner of how we capitulate is very worrying.
If we decide to stick with Slot, I would be bringing in the sports psychologist.
I think a fair and balanced post.
I’d like to think I understand everyone’s frustrations because they are my own experiences. I have said and stand by it that I don’t understand the hate Slot has received from our own fan base this season. If people want to dismiss his achievements last season, call him a fraud, only won with Klopp’s team then that is their opinion and I respect that.
This season has been a perfect storm, a lot of which you have highlighted. No RB’s, Konate/Macca/Salahs form nose diving. Turn around of players, the unknown but to be considered affect of the passing of Jota. Failing to sign Guehi or another starting CB. I also think a point worth considering is Losing Heitinga (SP), I recall conversation people questioning Rafa after losing Pako and when Klopp lost Buvac.
Like you, the concern I have is how we capitulate or to put it mildly give up almost accept defeat. It has definitely transcended on to the fans.
This is definitely not all on Slot, the players and Management need to be held accountable also. However, he has lost the Fans and for me that is the end of any Manager. I guess we will see.
“If you look at the 15, 20, 25 players with the most minutes this season, a lot of them are from us.
“That tells you a lot and one of the reasons why we have been a bit inconsistent, maybe why we have conceded so many late goals, because it is always the same players.
“Maybe from that perspective, it is a good thing we are not in Europe any more, but I would definitely prefer to play in Europe because that also gives an energy to the group if you go to the semi-final of the Champions League.
“I don’t see it as a positive thing we are out but it is the reality and we have a bit more training time now.”
Whose fault is it that’s always the same players? Whose fault is it that there are a lot of Liverpool players with the most accumulated minutes?
He’s taking the piss now, and no, injuries only account for part of it. He wasn’t rotating even with a healthy squad.
Loving the positivity, but it just feels like he’s lost everyone. Virgil saying we stopped trying was a big moment for me.
a lot of us, myself included are being Romanticist and expecting Alonso to be successful on the basis of attachment.
It’s a big concern of mine as well. I’d love to see Alonso here, but anyone thinking that he will be some sort of messianic figure will probably be disappointed.
I’m still puzzled as to what has gone wrong with the coaching. There is an article on TIA regarding Frimpong in which he is bewildered about why he has picked up injuries, and part of this seems to be that they aren’t being pushed as much on the training pitch.
I’m just wondering whether injuries that may have happened at Kirkby now happen on the pitch.
I can almost guarantee you if Alonso comes and does not do well, it will be blamed on Slot because he has cause so much harm that you have to give Alonso time to reverse them.
Because it’s true for some parts.
I can’t imagine anyone here thinks Alonso is a messiah who can fix the “Liverpool world” with the snap of his fingers. Sometimes you just shouldn’t think in black and white.
We all probably just need a little bit of hope again, so that we might manage to get out of this mess. Nobody expects a miracle, in my opinion.
I will have a pretty good idea how I will remember him.

100%
Its not black and white
Agree. Liverpool fans are patient when they can see effort, heart and a clear vision. Honestly, I think we would get that with a team under Alonso. That does not mean the results would immediately follow.
You need to get those foundations right before a rebuild can succeed. (Which is worrying if Slot does continue)
We look directionless, passive and lacking belief. Average results start to feel worse than they are, because of how we turn up (see PSG first leg as an example)
I think the fans can be won back if we start performing.
Slot’s interviews are really annoying but I don’t think anyone would be complaining too much if we were winning consistently.
The bigger question is his relationship with the players and whether a break will allow him to get his head screwed on properly.
Slot might be too far gone (I think he probably is)… but a part of me would also be worried about seeing him go to a rival, have that reset in both relationships and frame of mind and see him coach another team to be a challenger.
He might not know how to get us out of our present predicament but I think I would still like to see him go to another league which is something sadly we would have no control over.
We haven’t performed for about 12 months now though. We have dogshit for a YEAR…that’s the point.
Nobody wants Slot to fail, nobody wants their manager to fail…every fan wants their club to succeed. We are failing spectacularly this season. The fact we could still get in the CL is nothing short of miraculous and has more to do with other teams below us being shite! Slot has lost pretty much everyone from what I can work out and should not be our manager next season, although he probably will be.
