I don’t think we are. They have their bottom line, as we have our top. The fact that we’re still talking suggests that there’s room within that range for compromise. If we were playing their game, we would have paid it and been done with it already.
Why don’t Liverpool just go to PSG and put £160m on the table for Barcola and Mbaye as a double deal?
Don’t even separate the fees. £160m for the pair and get it done. Nobody needs to know exactly what’s been paid for each player. Realistically you could be looking at something like £120m for Barcola and £40m for Mbaye.
Look at what we’ve spent. Around £34m on Muñoz this summer, plus roughly £60m on Jérémy Jacquet, whose deal was agreed in January. Add another £160m and you’re looking at roughly £254m spent.
But then you’ve got the outgoings.
Once Barcola and Mbaye are through the door, Gakpo could potentially go to Spurs for around £70m, and if Curtis Jones goes to Inter for around £30m, that’s £100m coming back in. Suddenly you’re looking at a net spend of roughly £154m.
For the squad we’d then have, I don’t think that’s ridiculous at all.
And the biggest thing for me is Iraola.
We brought Iraola in knowing the type of football he wants to play. He wants pace, directness and players out wide who can beat a man and cause defenders problems. If we’re not going to give him those types of wingers, how can we expect him to play the football we brought him here to play?
Give the manager the tools to do the job.
Barcola and Mbaye give him exactly that, pace, trickery, width and players who can actually take someone on.
And while we’re negotiating with PSG, I’d be asking about Illia Zabarnyi as well. Iraola knows him extremely well from Bournemouth. If there’s an opportunity to get Zabarnyi on loan, or work something into the overall negotiations, explore it.
So go to PSG and have the conversation:
£160m for Barcola and Mbaye.
See if Zabarnyi can come on loan.
Then sort the outgoings afterwards.
We’re Liverpool. If these are genuinely the players Iraola wants for his system, give him the tools and get the deals done.
Stop telling porkies the Word Cup final was on 19th of July thats 18 days ago the story broke roughly 5 or 6 days after that and and the story of contact between the clubs was 9 days ago.
Slightly off topic but the damage done by both the 24 hr news cycle and social media to people’s patience and perception of time is a damning indictment of both innovations.
As long as we aren’t just waiting around and also doing other deals it’s no issue.
Then Hughes has a bit of form here, and I’ve actually stood up for him but if we don’t do the two minimum and maybe perhaps 3 then I do hope he goes,
I wasn’t a fan of the Diaz situation but what is the exact form Hughes has this gets banned about so much.
Definitely the rise of social media and 24hrs news has been shocking in the unrest it creates.
Well Diaz, the fact we’ve lost a defender and have yet decided to get one in with what looks like a reliance on Gomez.
Isak was just a generally poor way of getting something done to be honest. As I said I’ve stood up for him, I think most of his signings will do the business. I do think he’s got in a couple of really exciting defenders who will save us a lot, but you need a squad not a team. That may lie on Slot’s head but all that should have aligned.
Anyhow this has fuck all to do with Barcola and so I won’t reply to anything.
Turning everyone into this cautionary tale;

I don’t like how this is dragging on and on, but I’m still hopeful we will sign Barcola. I’ve been thinking the fee will end up being in the ballpark of the Isak number, hopefully a bit less, with the rest in add-ons.
I’m glad we are hanging in there with it as he is the best winger on the market.
Barcola, Mbaye, defender, maybe a midfielder depending on outgoing.
Four more main signings for me.
Dragging on and on its 9 days.
This is very true but our bid for Diomande was made in late June and at that point that seemed to be our pursuit of him done and dusted. So what’s stopped us doing anything all of July? I get the World Cup will play a part but it’s not as if it was entirely prohibitive.
Are we just at the mercy of PSG? And then what happens if they dig in, do we have the time to pivot to other targets and who even are they?
That’s my concern anyway, more so than whether it takes £100m or £125m to get the Barcola deal done.
Nyoni is our new midfielder.
He’s really good, and should step up to see more action. If Jones and, say, Macca end up departing, we might buy a midfielder in addition to promoting Nyoni from within. If it’s just Jones, I think Nyoni takes his place.
we are quite prone to stupidity it seems
£126 for Isak
£85 for Nunez
£80 for Ekitike
World cup not stopped any other team signing players…except us
Whats that got to do with you over egging things like its been 4 weeks when in facts its just over a week.
Did Munoz not come in already.

After last night’s unexpected gift, get Barcola and Scott and the treble will be ours.
