Breaking News Thread

It’s not finished yet. Half of the unstable parts of the mountain are still above the zone, nobody can get there and get to work, it’s too dangerous.

Meanwhile, this gigantic mass of instable rock, ice and earth is clogging up the valley, and water is rapidly mounting and forming a huge lake above that newly formed barrier ( rising depth of water roughly 80 cm per hour). Tomorrow, they announce around 20 degrees Celsius in the valley. That means that the ice contained in that barrier will start melting, while having to resist to that rapidly growing lake.

Tomorrow morning, the water will start finding its way through, with an enormous risk that, due to the melting ice, everything might come down at once.

Nobody knows exactly yet how things will unfold, but they are now thinking about evacuating the whole Lötschental, and also the towns located in the main valley located just beneath it. That’s thousands of people.

I know that valley well, I was in Blatten. Fine people there, very helpful and friendly . It’s an absolute tragedy for them. One person is missing btw, and probably buried under these millions of tons.

RIP to her.

Wasn’t the whole village evacuated a couple of weeks ago?

Yes, otherwise the death toll would be 100s of times higher.

Yes indeed. This woman was probably not in Blatten, but well above it, on the other side of the valley. When the mountain came down, it not only flattened the village, but also a good part of the forests on the other side.

For the time being, the lake ist still expanding, and the water will start flowing today, without anybody knowing the state of these unstable 10 million m3, and how they will react to the huge pressure of all that water.

Also, a small village above Blatten, called Wiler, has now been flooded. A good part of the chalets are under water. Before the catastrophe, that place was like paradise on earth.

Meanwhile, the village underneath, called Kippel, has been evacuated and they are still not excluding to evacuate the whole valley.

Edit: a man, not a woman.

Hmmm.

Why the hmm?

Oh my fucking God, what did Ukraine just do today !!!
This is the most successful special operation since the war began. To say I am shocked is an understatement.
LOOK at this video and thread. Oh my God, oh my God ! How did they manage to get through GBAD to hit so many of extremely valuable strategic aircrafts.

Can almost see them burning from Norway

Drones were launched from a cargo truck !

An insane number of precious (and extremely limited in number) strategic bombers were hit. This will absolutely save thousands of lives, since there is nothing Ukrianian air defence can normally do to stop these bastards before they launch cruise missiles several hundred kilometers away

And indeed ! It is absolutely stunning; 007 go to bed. You are nothing.

(This truck is inside Russia; hear them shoot at the drones with AKs !

So we have a super duper sophisticated special operation, where long range drones flying 4000 km from Ukraine calibrated their strike with James Bond truck full of FPV drones located close to the target airfield deep inside Russia. Oh my God, hollywood doesn’t do this.

This still image, dear lord:

So far, Olenya and Balaya air bases confirmed to have been hit (with critical damage). There are rumours of other air bases having been hit as well, but not yet confirmed.
More than 40 aircraft said to be hit in total (but there is no confirmation of so many air frames hit, I need to stress) ! The scale of this strike is inconceivable. The war has seen nothing like this; this is Pearl Harbour sized.

So far there are 10 video-confirmed destroyed aircraft from Russia’s Strategic Aviation (and it’s Nuclear Triad). But this is just what is confirmed so far.

There were 5 attempted attacks by cargo trucks filled with drones. 2 were undetected, unleashing their cargo in Siberia (Irkutsk) and Murmansk respectively. A Ru video shows another cargo truck destroyed some where in Russia (so FSB sadly managed to get a couple of the, what should we call it, mothership-truck?)
Here is an example of one of the failed attacks:

FSB will be rather busy and overworked, searching trucks inside Russia.

(Oh, and SBU boody trapped all the containers to self destruct after the operation).

First BDA has started. This is very preliminary and from Belanya air base in Irkutsk.
Better satalite rendering tomorrow for BDA.

Note: This is from JanesIntel. So far the first. More tomorrow.

Sad news throughout.

Not getting on a Boeing anytime soon.

A flight my wife’s extended family take from time to time as they are originally from Gujarat.

Only flown AI once, and wouldn’t again.

Hopefully some have survived, but suspect not many given it was on take-off for a long haul journey, so fully laden with fuel.

Don’t generally fly air india but that’s more to do with their overpriced tickets , substandard service etc.

But this seems more of a Boeing problem.

Not a breaking news, but worth a look

For me, if it’s a Boeing, I’m still going.
My next flights in a week and a half are A320s.
Then, in early September, it’s 2 sectors on 787-10s.
To me, when you gotta go, you gotta go. Doesn’t matter which aircraft and which airline.
My closest brush was the Silkair Flight185 of 1997. I was booked on it but cancelled because my customer postponed my visit 3 days before the schedule.
In recent decades, only 2017 and 2022 had seen no passenger jetliner hull losses and no fatalities.
