Don’t know if this the most appropriate thread for this, but it warrants attention.
We already knew Brazil was capable of this and in fact the questions ran the other way - were they too willing to use the justice department to punish political enemies. I don’t know enough to have an opinion, but I know Lula’s conviction and jailing was very controversial and won on the back of a weak case.
As a matter of fact, Lula was innocent of everything he was accused of, and was eventually exonerated by the supreme court, despite of extreme political pressure from his opponents. That’s what allowed him to relaunch his political career.
Bolsonaro on the other hand has now been recognised guilty of organising the attack on their institution, and has thus been condemned as the felon he is.
Really, Brazil have shown the US how it gets done, and it’s a shame that the latter seem unable/unwilling to learn one or two things from other countries, instead of believing the tale that they are the best and most evolved country in the world.
Do you get that this isnt a rebuttal? He spent over a year in prison for crimes he, according to you, didn’t commit. He was released because of independent investigations and broad international pressure including from UN. His conviction removed from politics, allowing Bolsonaro to win an election Lula almost certainly would have won. All because of a political prosecution.
So as I said, this Bolsonaro conviction doesnt tell us anything we dont already know about Brazil and their capability to lock up powerful politicians. But that isn’t in itself a good thing.
In Bolsonaro’s case, I firmly believe that it’s the right thing to do. Hopefully he’ll stay locked up until he deceases.
That was not the point of contention though. It was that being willing and able to lock up politicians is not in itself a good thing or a marker of a strong democracy. It is very often an marker of the exact opposite.
Well it depends on what they have done. Not allowing politicians to be above the law is, with respect, a very important and necessary condition of democracy. @Hope.in.your.heart is dead right on this that the US would be in a much better place if it could have understood this better like Brazil
I guess in practice, yeah that’s what you want a functioning democracy to do. But it’s a power that’s abused more often than not. What’s more integral is completely independent judiciary that’s able to make these decisions with zero outside influence.
Haven’t had an properly independent judiciary in the US for 30+ years and the US Supreme Court has been a laughing stock for more than a decade.
And that has far more to do on why the US is fucked than the “transes” or a jeans ad.

Provocations are now almost daily. Poland, Estonia, Moldova, Romania, Sweden and Denmark.
This costs a lot of money when you have to ground flights, but we are just taking it, as always and there is little media attention compared to how serious it is.

It has navigation lights.
In Norway, they used small drones. Probably sent out by foreign tourists hired by you know who, as usual.

Russia has been, for the last 2 years, undermining Moldova maassively (over 200 000 hacks and more).
They are now constructing a Casus Belli like in Ukraine. This is very dangerous.
They are spamming this report on Tass and other Russian news sites, just as they have done in the past
I cannot stress how dangerous this is. It has long seemed as if they plan to invade Moldova, but this is the Golden Calf of Russian constructed Casus Belli’s and reads like more final war preparations.
Obviously, the geography makes it impossible to invade in the very near term, but it’s clearly the plan if they get control of supply lines.

(this was yesterday though)
Fair play to this guy.
Imagine Starmer doing this?
He’d be more like Sgt Wilson from Dad’s Army.
“Would you chaps mind awfully not doing that?”
