Caoimhin KELLEHER: 2020/21

We could feel our resources would be better off in another departement.

Karius at his best is a much better goalkeeper than Adrian at his best.

Both of them at their best are not even close to good enough to be our backup goalkeeper.

I haven’t seen Karius in ages however he was the worst I ever saw!

Peak Westerveld better than Karius and Adrian. Heck I’d even go as far as saying Carson was better.

Kin hell we’ve been blessed with some shockers - Even Dudek was hit and miss.

Sending Kelleher on loan makes absolutely no sense.

His contract expires in a year according to Transfermarkt. I doubt he would sign a new one at this stage.

If he’s going on a free, you might as well keep him for a year, then look for a decent back up next year.

If he can be persuaded to sign a new deal (I wouldn’t) then maybe you could look at loaning him, but again, what’s the point? Alisson is young enough to be our first choice for years to come. There is no way you can develop Kelleher with any expectation that he displaces Alisson in the next five years.

A trade off with having a keeper as young and dominant (and seemingly committed) as Alisson is that there is little you can do to attract a really good deputy. You can’t suggest, with any degree of credibility, there is a potential pathway to first team football for a back up. You can possibly make a case that Alisson misses games, and the back up might get a handful of games.

This will be the situation with Kelleher right now. As much as he is a bloody good young keeper, with bags of potential, we can’t suggest to him that he has a chance of grabbing the number one jersey in the next five years, by which time he’ll be 27 - and with the bulk of his career behind him.

I think we need to get used to a bit of churn in the back up positions. We can probably expect a back up keeper to do 1-2 years before we have to let them go, and that might need to be the understanding when they sign.

Adrian is OK as third choice. Wouldn’t really want him to be any more than that.

True.

But both are at their worst at the moment and the question is who is worse.

Karius is something of a conundrum. When he was with us he was pretty good. But a mistake absolutely destroys him, seemingly for weeks. That kind of mentality is toxic in a goalkeeper.

True.

I remember him being pretty good (better than Mignolet) till Kiev. Since then he has been on a freefall. Turkish League is pretty meh and he couldn’t keep his place even there. I actually feel sorry for him.

My opinion on Karius v Adrian

I’d keep Karius over Adrian, both no good but ones younger than the other so might aswell. I have a feeling if memory is correct that Karius was okay with his feet compared to Adrian. His mentality is shocking though, made the first error in Kiev (had multiple beforehand though but got off due to the excellence of Mo and co) then made the second but also in pre season he was at fault for one or two in his first game back. I think Jürgen knew then this lad woudlnt be the same keeper or proves his mentality was too weak for a top level keeper.

Adrian seems more confident but maybe not in a good way, I personally feel that he thinks he’s better than he is. If the boss wanted to keep one of them I’d go Karius as he can still improve due to his age but Adrian is done, he’s in his 30s past his peak. But if Kelleher stays I’d bin the pair of them

If Kelleher is staying he needs to be number 2, if we are keeping Adrian as a number 3 that doesn’t concern me too much but Kelleher should get the number 2 shirt unless Adrian finds some form or quality and to be honest his trajectory seems to be downward.

As for Karius how’s his contract, would he come back to challenge for second spot? If it’s more worthwhile than keeping Adrian then it maybe should be considered but again he is a 3rd choice at best.

Karius has another year left in this contract. After spending the last season as a backup GK for a midlevel club in the German League, I don’t think he has any prospect with us.

As for Kelleher, I can see him holding on to a starting spot at some Championship club.

Karius never would have gone on loan had he been happy to be the backup here after starting a Champions League final.

He’s been in the wilderness for a few years now and neither of his loans went at all like he probably thought they would. All of which might make him happy to be the #2 here now - which I think would be perfectly fine. He’s not a great shot stopper, but is good with his feet and at coming out quickly to close down counter attacks (key for how we play).

My biggest concern with him as that he just seems to be a bit unlucky. Alison comes out, takes chances, makes mistakes, and is rarely punished for them, while Karius’ mistakes invariably are punished.

But I would agree the if Kelleher stays, he needs to be #2 so I have no idea how it would work out.

Karius made loads of errors before Kiev. He was awful in his first season at the club.

Athletically he’s great, technically he makes loads of mistakes, and mentally he’s not there either. Was never good enough for us regardless of Kiev.

Adrian is just shit.

Karius is way better than Adrian. But Karius is also a mentality midget. He’s one of the worst keepers we’ve had in the last 30+ years but he’s still better than Adrian.

Neither should be part of our squad next year, thankfully.

I think Kelleher should be the #2 GK for the incoming season. However, if he doesn’t sign an extension soon, I wouldn’t mind selling him.

Cue Adrian signing a new deal today hahaha

Goalkeeper contracts all round! Unless Kelleher now goes on loan I guess we are sorted on GK front for a year or two!

I’m predicting a loan move as a deal within the contract. Long term contract is usually 4/5 years which is nice. I wouldn’t mind us getting someone like Alex McCarthey in, is he first choice for Southampton?

There’s an interview and he mentions spending his whole career with us and developing more with us. To me that sounds like no loan but guess we will wait and see. If we do need a 2nd choice Keeper Paulo Gazzaniga would be my choice, free agent on July 1st.

Let’s wait with loaning him about until after the first month of the season.
