Champions League 1/4 final and 1/2 final draw

Okay, let’s go and give it our all.

We’re not the favourites with the problems we have obviously. It’s not like our chances are slim either, but I can’t objectivelly say it’s a good draw for us.

It’s Real Madrid. Like them or not as a club and how they work (or some parts of them, like this Ramos-hate), I’ve seen that movie where people write them off way too often.

As clubs, it’s games I want to see every year. We played them only 6 times in our history, twice in a final. That’s not enough, I want challenges like this every year. So from that perspective, I’m excited.

Tactically, it will be very interesting.

Let’s see if they have Carvajal back at RB. Question remains over position 1 and 2 in attack alongside Benzema. They can sometimes flip their formation from 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 diamond (which they played in Kiev with Isco at the top of it). Benzema himself already plays that false 9 role probably better (technically for sure) than anyone in the world. I could see them playing two combining players and one runner who will look to attack space. They’re maybe not an impressive team (it’s just not how they work, their philosophy is buying top players and winning), but it’s an outstanding group of players. Technically brilliant, among the very best, strong mentally in big games with big experience. It was often the case that they raise their levels with higher challenges.

On our side, we’ll see how our back line reacts. Who starts up top. Bobby or Jota on the bench. Maybe start with both and play with a double-six. Who knows. Gini played RCM and Milner played LCM in Kiev. I wanted it to be the opposite, that Gini goes against Modric and Milner plays against Kroos. This time Gini is LCM so he’ll go up against Modric, who is still for me one of the best midfielders in the game. Thiago most probably against Kroos.

Real love teams like us. We can cause them problems even with our problems, but they have the technique and know how to play around and through our pressure. They showed it in Kiev, flipping Casemiro with either Kroos or Modric in the build up, to avoid that Bobby vs Casemiro battle, which was our target. On paper, they should have more chances of imposing their qualities.

I just don’t see us going through, Real or Chelsea will probably knock us out.

But it’s still exciting. I’m relaxed as I’m not expecting much. Let’s give it 100% and die like men!

The only thing I would say about Madrid is that Benzema is probably one of the most under appreciated strikers in Europe.

Vinícius Júnior and his speed could really hurt us.

They will fancy their chances and we will fancy ours too. It will be a great European occasion, some needle perhaps, given what has gone on before quite recently, and I can’t wait.

Two European giants, with proper pedigree. The plastic clubs have assembled fine collections of players, but where’s the soul? For all the talk of the quadruple with Man City, I would love it, really love it, Kevin Keegan style, if they go out again.

I think it is 18 European Cups between Liverpool and Real Madrid, even if the first five that Real Madrid won weren’t contested by all of Europe and need an asterisk next to them.

How many it is between City and Everton, you know the 2 clubs who have so much fun about us this season …? :sunglasses:

This is why I like/respect even cunts like Ramos or Keane. They could find that attachment with their respective clubs to be so venomous. City, PSG will only have divas like Toure and Neymar.

I wish we had Ramos playing alongside van Dijk in our defence and regarding Keane, with him and Gerrard in our midfield winning the PL would not have taken 30 years, so yes I agree.

Real have been my favourite Spanish club for over 45 years now with the exception of 2 years ago and the coming clash :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:, can’t stand those Barcelona prima donnas.

Yes, considering our makeshift defence, Hendo still out and our forwards far from being in top form, that’s how I’d consider our chances. Only my opinion, but everyone talking about Real as if they have a bad season, are in crisis and what not, consider the following:

  • they are currently second in their league, three points behind Atletico.
  • qualified with ease for this round against Atalanta, who are no pushovers by any means.

Also, they have almost all their top players available. I’d love for us to be in that sort of ‘crisis’ to be honest.

Yup, one in four seems about reasonable to me. Of course, I hope that we can upset the odds! :crossed_fingers:t2:

But in 4 week Mané could be scoring like crazy again :sunglasses:

It would be really difficult for him to be much worse than he has been in the last few weeks so it’s a positive

I wish they’d got us with a full team. I think we’d absolutely pummel them.

Well it’s another 2.5 weeks away.

Hendo back?

On current form and quality I’d say it’s the biggest fifty-fifty game of the season.

Dark arts (cheating, getting all decisions for them and stuff like that) speaks for them.

The Klopp factor in European KO games and timing fixtures (the classico between both games and we playing the second leg at home) speaks for us.

Think our CBs will put Benzema in their pocket.

Casemiro, Kroos, Modric vs. Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Thiago

Let’s see how that works out.
