The club were open to offers and still are but not for this window.
Apparently Gakpo didnāt want to leave yet the club was offering him.
When this was known I assumed the club seeing the contract renewal as an error as the salary negotiated was too high.
I did think it was conditional on being able to bring someone in. Yes we got Barcola but our RX is still on the light side.
The club is in a bit of a pickle imo and I think weāll see some things like this happening. Gravenberch?
Yeah, relieved too about that. Their offer wasnāt high enough anyway. For 100-120 millions, it might have been worth it, but 75m? Nope.
Regarding your question, and based on what we have seen until now with that double pivot system in midfield, in the short and middle term, we might see :

Barcola__Wirtz__Gakpo
With Munoz able to cover all these positions, Rio will probably serve as a back-up for LW and RW. That will help him develop his game without being burnt out. In the short term, weāll see how Iraola does set them up. But itās good to have a bit more depth for these positions now.
As for Gakpo, if he wants to leave at some point, he can do it when weāll have identified a strong target for RW. Although, Munoz looked the part at RW the other day. Maybe heāll quickly cement his place in this position, who knows?
Of course, this relies on Isak finally finding some form, and staying fit. Otherwise, weāll probably see Gakpo take his place in the short term.
Edit: completely forgot about Ekitike, who is bound to come back at some point. That will be a nice problem to have for Iraola! 
Iām not sure either of these need to be true to explain the club / player actions this summer. I think the most likely answer is that both club and player were happy for Cody to stay, but also pragmatic enough to be open to him leaving if the opportunity was there for him and a suitable replacement available.
He isnāt guaranteed to start but is still a good player - but from the clubās perspective if he can provide effective cover on the right wing as well as left and in the centre can justify that new salary.
If he isnāt guaranteed to start, then you can imagine the player will be open to exploring what options are available elsewhere and given his salary and the rebuilding the squad needs why the club would be open to selling him.

As Gakpo is a top earner if he isnāt starting then the club will be looking to move him on, not just the player.
Iām not arguing however you havenāt explained anything. Just confused them.
We know the club was open to offers for Gakpo. Thatās all we need to explain without conflation.
