Gakpo is a squad player. Good, but far from great. There’s nothing particularly special about him. He contributes, certainly, but £85m or thereabouts is a very strong offer.
There are plenty of areas that need strengthening. The real issue is saying no to that kind of money because you don’t have the ability to reinvest it in genuine quality, whether as his replacement or elsewhere in the team.
Not convinced we’d receive much of a better offer for him.
The issue isn’t the £85m, you’d have to be high on meth to not accept that for a player like Gakpo, the issue is there’s about 72 hours left to sign players and no one trusts Hughes or the board to do what’s neccessary.

I assume the “it’s up to Gakpo” framing is saying he knows he is being demoted with Barcola coming in. He can either stay and fight for minutes but if he doesn’t want to we have his replacement lined up and ready to pull the trigger on.

Was thinking if we know a deal could go through for say Minteh. But only if Gakpo wants to go. That or we are working on a midfielder as a priority.
£85m is Savinho money. He’s a sight better than that and our best player right now with a goal and two assists in two games. This musical chairs shit is just to make the balance sheet look better rather than build a powerful squad. We should have Barcola and Gakpo. That’s what City and even Arsenal now would do ffs

We can’t possibly let Gakpo leave unless there’s more signings, the squad is thin enough as it is.

Well, said early in the thread that I dont blame him for wanting out given the vitriol thrown his was last season. Yes, he had a bad season, but the shit thrown his way was unnecessary. Lot of the people who’ve sounded off all high and mighty about Barca’s treatment of Araujo could probably do with a moment of self reflection regarding our own players. Add in the personal stuff with his missus and the child over the summer and it makes complete sense how he’d want a change of scenery.
From a squad building perspective: leaves us scrambling late to find another forward. Over paying for Minteh or pushing for someone else? Either way clubs got its work cut out in the final part of the window.

I’d have preferred to wait until we actually had this mystery other wide player through the door.
With such a thin squad losing another player is far from ideal but if Gakpo has decided to leave I guess it’s just a case of trying to get as much as possible out of City and look to reinvest it in the squad - right wing, midfield, full backs, striker could all still do with strengthening.

Something might be close with someone to come in, but we don’t have to know this in this moment.
We’ll find out in a few days at the latest, just a little bit of patience.
He’s been our best player this season, and we’re in talks to sell him to one of our main rivals. What the fuck is going on with this club?
