Darwin NUNEZ: 2022/23

We had 25 attempts last night and scored 2 goals, i only remember Nunez missing one chance, but some seem to think he missed the other 23.

A lot of it can be down to pressure, the odd setup Klopp started with this season, the team being in a sorry state. When ManƩ came in he was PL ready and had Coutinho to help out attack wise. When Salah came in he had already experienced PL football and had ManƩ and Coutinho plus Firmino. Diaz also came into a settled team.

Nunez is in a really unenviable position of having Haaland as a direct comparitor.
And Liverpool supporters are also culpable of thisā€¦ā€˜stick a cheeky tenner on Darwin to score more than Haalandā€™ etc.

I think he needs time to adjust. The red card hasnt helped his cause, but its very early days to be over analysing what he is doing wrong and comparing him to Mane. He was never a direct replacement, we have not had a striker like him for ages.

Itā€™s actually quite intriguing as we have no idea how he will turn out. I can see why there are some worries as he doesnā€™t look as technical as our other guys, but he is always involved, and we seem to create more chances when heā€™s on the pitch. Look forward to seeing what Klopp achieves with his rough diamond

I think heā€™s one of those players who needs to play on the edge, without overthinking, and at the moment heā€™s a little in his own head, and his touch is too heavy or too light. Not to say heā€™s Bergkamp, he obviously isnā€™t, but heā€™s not quite as technically sloppy as he has appeared at times.

He has had a slow start and not been particularly good, but has also showed potential. Too early to judge, but he is not the finished super star article. Maybe he can be, time will tell.

And it doesnā€™t help that Salah needs something like 10 chances to score either this season either. Right now, with Nunez being so fresh, I am more worried about Salah and how many chances he needs to score. Iā€™ll give Nunez a bit more time.

Nope, never used a flop ex-player as reference for another player. Ever.

Not yet

Like I get people here always want to show me up in a bad light, thatā€™s fine Iā€™m ok with it but donā€™t start throwing out things that you know arenā€™t true or havenā€™t said unless you can quote me on it.

Even when I donā€™t say anything bad about a player, I get comments (like the one above) turning it around on me in a negative way. Whatā€™s the need? Treat every post how you see it, not based on some comments made in a match day thread last week or last season or in a players thread and use that against me everytime.

I said he appears thick as mince. Which on reflection was probably a bit harsh, but you know heā€™s a big lad, sure heā€™ll be ok.

I said this though for correct reasons, firstly the sending off was just stupid and then last few appearances he isnā€™t using his head againā€¦ Far too many runs into blind alleys, far too many silly petulant fouls for no reasonā€¦ All of which break up our rhythm and slow down our tempo, helping the opponent break up the game.

Thatā€™s where he needs to be smarter, he needs to calm down as his abiility isnā€™t in doubt. Weā€™ve seem flashes of some player, but thatā€™s not enough here, not nearly enough.

He clearly has rough edges as a playerā€¦ but he also clearly has an innate ability to create chances. He caused problems for Ajax from the moment he came on - shot just wide, powered in from the edge and force a great finger touch from their keeper to take that squared ball away from Diaz completely unmarked at the far post. Yes, none of it resulted in a goal and maybe the all around game doesnā€™t merit consistent starting (yet), but certainly a very very useful tool to have laying about the shed at the moment.

Looks like he is trying too hard to score, trying to snatch a goal as if ā€˜Nunez vs Haalandā€™ is occupying his mind all the time. That desperation to grab a goal seems to be hindering his natural abilities.
Next time he gets onto the field, i hope he goes with a free mind and an intention to simply enjoy the game, no matter what the scoreline is. Once he starts enjoying his football with the 10 other teammates, goals and assists will come naturally.

I feel that a player like him will become one that will thrive on playing often enough and having enough chances to convert. In a way that was how Salah was in that, he plays almost every game and plays alot of games for the full 90 minutes and while he converts many chances, he also missed many so I think as Nunez is still young, he will have alot of time to improve on his conversion percentages but for now, I can see him needing a consistent run of matches to get in the groove and to gain some understanding with the rest of the team and I agree that because Haaland has gotten to such a good start and because there will always be people who harp on why we could not gone for Haaland at a transfer fee lower than what we paid for Nunez, there will always be people who would be more than happy to jump on Nunez the longer he does not score consistently and use that to infer how bad the ownership and the club is in recruitment etcā€¦

Ladā€™s on a hiding to nothing and I fear for his Liverpool career at times. Yes, there are moments he reminds me of Carroll, while there are also moments when he reminds me of Torres. I find it frustrating that he used to score from all kinds of positions at Benfica, while he canā€™t even hit the ball on target in the games he played here (and Diaz, who seemed a decent finisher at Porto, is also guilty of some wayward shooting). Patience will be needed, I guess, but for his sake, I hope that Jota, Diaz and Salah can form an understanding first and hit some form, so the pressure is off of Nunez and he can use minutes off the bench to properly acquaint himself with the team and the league.

For those members slating Darwin, if it makes you feel any better, go have a look at Grealishā€™s stats since joining Cityā€¦reminder they paid Ā£100m transfer fee plus heā€™s getting Ā£300,000 in wages per week!

I canā€™t help but wonder if all this talk about a rivalry is only in the heads of fans and a gleeful media all too happy to encourage it for the sake of clicks.

Iā€™m inclined to think, and perhaps this is my personal bias, that the player himself is more concerned with getting off to a good start here, especially after the setback that was his own fault, while being acutely aware that his situation is very different from a striker at City, since there were already established goalscorers in this club who were the main focal point of the attack, not to mention that there already are 2 other strikers here who not only have already been well settled into the team, but also have proven records here.

I also think, that if itā€™s a question of mentality, he has a good role model in the form of Mohamed Salah, who knows all about pressure, goal droughts, and just playing a natural game (not to mention avoiding bread).

He hasnā€™t set the world alight but comparisons with Carroll are way off the mark primarily due to the their respective mentalities. Carroll didnā€™t want to be at Liverpool and probably didnā€™t like being a professional footballer that much to begin with. Nunez on the other hand, couldnā€™t wait to sign and his desire to score goals is plain for everyone to see.

From a technical standpoint, Nunez is better than what heā€™s shown. He is trying too hard and itā€™s affecting him. Once he relaxes and he settles down, heā€™ll become more effective. On the contrary, Carroll was a donkey who got by thanks to his physical traits.

Last but not least, Nunez has yet to complete 90 minutes, the season is less than two months old and heā€™s playing with a team that until now has been highly dysfunctional. He deserves at the very least a full season before judgments are passed about his ability and potential.

There are a lot of players who have been written off by fans because they had initial struggles to settle.

Robertson, Fabinho, Firmino, Tsimikas, Trent come to mind.

And even if he is struggling, Klopp is not a manager who will write a player off. Heā€™ll work with him and sort it out.
