He’s only a few games into his Liverpool career. I’m not worried in the slightest about Darwin. I see a player laden with threat and goalscoring intent. Raw, yes, but explosive, and when it starts to click for him with his teammates, the goals will flow.
Some people aren’t even willing to apply the well acclaimed TAN method to judge Nunez. Passing a verdict without watching 10 games? Even Gasband’s artworks get more objective criticism.
Unfortunately, 10 games only applies to considering incoming transfers. Once they’re through the door, expectation are of goals goals goals instantly.
If the rest of the squad was fit and firing, we wouldn’t be having any such decisions, as Nunez would be getting the service he needs to score. Stick Halaand into our misfunctioning team and he’s not scoring at the rate he is right now at City.
My previous comment was responded to as if I was writing him off despite clearly stating that I wasn’t. But we can be supportive of him while still being clear eyed about what we’ve seen and what he’s experiencing. His issue has not been a lack of service. A competent on form finisher would have had 5 or 6 goals by now with the chances that have come his way, and would likely have not wound himself up so much that he got himself stupidly sent off. You can take positives from the fact that he has been getting chances, but the issue has been that he has fluffed them all, sometimes quite embarrassingly. So far the only one in the league he has put away is a chance he actually fluffed and scored after the defender cleared it back into him and saw it rebound back into the goal.
I guess this is the key bit that is formulating all the questions/debate about Nunez.
If he incompetent? is he off form? Or his is both?
Are we really discussing the performances of a new signing after 5 games while basically all of our players are struggling this season?
Anyone who wants to compare him to Haaland should maybe first compare what the Nunez package will cost us after 5 years to what the Haaland package will cost City after 5 years.
We’ve been spoiled by signings like Diaz, Suarez and Mo who hit the ground running. Those were exceptions. Most players take time to settle in a new country, language, system etc.
275 goals vs 112 goals and 8 red cards.
People get bored quickly as it is GR, nevermind waiting around 3 weeks for the next game.
How many minutes has he actually played? And he still scored two.
If he was walking around doing nothing I’d be worried but he nearly scored and created another on Tuesday plus allowed Matip to pop up twice because Ajax decided to double up on marking him.
I still feel he is scoring 20-25 this season.
Lets put it this way, I’m pretty sure he’s missed more minutes to suspension.
176 minutes in the league. 259 total.
Hardly begun.
Yet already a flop. According to some, at least.
Ultimately Haaland is a better player. At least so far. Hopefully Nunez will perform and be one of the very top forwards in the world. At least be like a Cavani level player.
As for the difference in cost, how much roughly? Does the difference really matter so much as long as you’ve got a top player. City have done well in recruiting him. No question there. That said think it’s too soon to make any real judgement yet, the team itself just hasn’t been performing.
Looking at the top centre forwards in the game, where would we rate Nunez? A selection of players as follows: Mbappe, Haaland, Kane, Lewandowski, Vlahovic, Benzema, Osimhen, Jesus, Alvarez, Lukaku.
Apologies if you feel my edited quote of your post doesn’t quite convey the message you were hoping but with regard to Haaland it’s a clear case of having thrown money at the issue.
No doubt a quality striker but when there are no boundaries within which you can operate as a club then this is what ultimately happens. They can just recruit whoever they want. They can pretend all they want about net spends and transfer fee etc. Truth is they’re playing to their own rules.
As far as Nunez goes, I think he’ll be fine. He’s adjusting, we are adjusting etc. etc.
I think the difference is that Nunez is a team player who grafts and works for the whole. Haaland is what we’d have described at school as a “scav” Never leaves the penalty box and smacks in rebounds. Granted it’s very effective when you already have 10 world class grafters behind you.
Don’t understand the constant need to compare him with Haaland, the only thing they have in common is that both are big moves at the same time. He started brilliantly, Nunez not so much. What happens in the long run? Nobody knows. With Haaland it seems like he might remain a success long term, with Nunez he obviously needs more time to adjust.
So 1 goal, 1 assist… basically a goal involvement every 90 minutes to start…
Seems to play LW for his country. Wonder is that why he naturally goes to the left a lot for us
