Darwin NUNEZ: 2022/23

It looked like that on the slow-motion replay, but live I’m pretty sure it’s about as much time as it would normally take for one to react to getting smacked in the face…

He’s a bloody weird footballer.

Has spells in games where he looks like it’s the first time he’s seen a ball. And then he scores and looks like an absolute menace.

He’s quietly scored 4 in 5 now, which probably puts him up there with the most effective ‘flop’ ever.

I liked that shithousery, the knobhead on Robbos side was trying to get Robbo booked 7 or 8 times so glad he did something back to them. Sort of stopped after that oddly.

At this point of time, he does look like his career can still go either way. This match is not dissimilar to other matches he played, he can impress and frustrate in the same match. I think Klopp is trying to really ease the pressure on him, I would think if Jota and Diaz are not injured, he would not have started recent games. He needs to overcome the pressure and do more of the good things like scoring, hustling and getting into good positions and do lesser of scuffing shots, missing open goals and butting people. He is young and will learn and he looks good but if he is not careful and does consistently perform, soon he will just drown as one of those potentials who never really make it.

It was Henderson actually. He shifted out a little wider and plugged that hole a bit.

There’s something about Nunez I like. He’s quick, his movement is good, and he works hard.

I think he grows into something pretty decent for us.

Got a huge bear hug from Klopp when he went off, great to see… if anyone can’t see how he’s going to be an absolute monster then shame on them.

Love the guy already. He’s a real presence upfront , scares the shit out of defenders and scores goals.

If he’d have played at Forest we would have won that game.

Not really bothered about the missed chances, I get far more worried and frustrated when we play games like Forest and never look like scoring.

Every game Nunez plays he looks like he has 2 goals in him. He’s at a goal every 106 minutes so far with plenty of room for improvement in his finishing.

I think this guy is fantastic tbh.

This lad’s surname is inconsistency. I was scratching my head more than once when I saw him erring on the pitch at times, completely lost and out of sync with the rest of his team-mates. But then, he suddenly pops up and is incredibly dangerous in front of goal, like on that missed chance on the post, which he should have buried to be fair. But his movement to be there was excellent. His header for the goal was fantastic. And he did a lot of work defensively, as he should.

It’s up and down and up and down with him for the time being. Nothing that can’t be trained our of him and replaced with better consistency. He has the talent and is still young. But he must immediately cut out cheating acts like on that crap simulation. That is unacceptable for a Liverpool player in my book, and I hope that Klopp will have a word with him about that.

Best bit was when he appeared at CB and won the ball, that for me was brilliant, I at first thought who the heck is that lol

I know it grates with a lot of people , and I admit to being a little embarrassed by that particular act last night. But … it’s part of the game now and we have it done to us all the fucking time. It’s gaining any advantage you can. It’s what Suarez did every time he stepped on the pitch and look how many games he won singlehandedly for us. I don’t want to see him tamed.

I understand what you mean, but still… I loved Suarez to bits when he was with us, but that was a part of his game I didn’t like. Of course, passion can at times carry you away (and God, did he get being carried away at the time!), that is entirely understandable.

However, consciously trying to con the ref with play-acting isn’t something which should be applauded nor encouraged, rather stamped out of the game decisively. I was surprised that he didn’t get a yellow for that to be honest, he was lucky.

There are players who make me want to tear my hair out when they miss a sitter (Salah), players who just make me shrug with sadness when it happens (Firmino), players who make me think “oh, well, it happens, he’ll score the next one” (Mane :frowning: ) - Nunez takes the very special place of being the only one in the category of players who miss a sitter and genuinely make me laugh. Obviously, it has a lot to do with this season being an almost complete write-off from my point of view but you get my drift.

He definitely has one of the worst first touches I’ve seen from a forward in my life - unless that touch is a shot! He has to play on instinct and the team needs to help him do that (West Ham game was a good example - that left-footed drop-shot from a long ball was amazing). Basically, the team need to create a lot of chances for him - whether it’s a lot of crosses or through balls, I genuinely think he doesn’t care, as long as he’s able to get a shot off.

I don’t think his hold-up play will improve significantly, I don’t think that he’ll be able to help the team in the build-up of attacks by having the ball or playing some quick one-twos or any of that tippy-tappy stuff. His presence and constant movement will likely unsettle a few defenders and create space for players who are actually good at it and if they can help him get on the end of such a move, we’ll see the best of him.

Right now, I’m just happy that he’s slowly gelling with the side and this side, while seemingly unable to defend consistently well, genuinely looks more dangerous and unpredictable in attack when he’s involved. I expect to see a lot of ups and downs from him but I really hope his Liverpool career has already got a lift-off and that its trend is upwards.

It’s remarkable actually how rare it is to see a card for any type of simulation. You’d think for incidents like last night’s that VAR would take a look at it. Firstly to determine whether it’s deliberate violent conduct , and secondly to see if the player is simulating in the hope of getting a player sent off. If we start booking players for it then we are likely to see a lot less of it.

Think back to that Madrid game when we had to hook Sadio at half time. Their players were clearly trying every trick in the book to get him sent off. If they knew they were likely to be punished themselves they would have thought twice before trying that crap.

Stuff like this helps. Back between 18-20 we were so good because all of our midfielders and forwards would do things like this regularly, it makes us much harder to beat.

What an odd thing to say.

We have qualified for the Champions League knockout stages; the Premier League isn’t even one-third through; we are defending champions for both domestic cups, neither of which have started yet for us.

This season is far from over.
