That prediction could come back to bite you.
Or that he seemed to be the only one to win defensive headers from corners
I think that you underestimate the average football fan well, especially the average Liverpool fan. We all see what he does for the team but the fact remains that he could make life so much easier for the team when he scores a few of the enormous chances he gets.
In the end, he IS first and foremost paid to score goals and at the moment he simply isnât doing that.
He isnât doing that enough⊠yet.
Iâm all aboard the Nunez train, but it is a fair criticism to say that there havenât been enough goals from the chances he has had.
It will come.
In the meantime, I am enjoying something early on in its emergence. It feels like being a football fan. Like watching Henry at Monaco, or Lewandowski early days at Dortmund. For those two, obviously we now have the benefit of hindsight as they kicked on, and the rest was history.
I am backing Darwin Nunez to do the same. I like him already, and I canât wait to see where he gets to with us.
Some improve with time, some donât.
Some will be in between, good, but not quite good enough to be a protagonist up top for a side that is wishing/aiming at the highest honours.
This is little different from the period Thiago was getting slated left, right and centre. He obviously wasnât the problem, but heâs new, and itâs a narrative they can run with.
Not seen much of him post WC but I understand that heâs doing all the right things with regard to getting goal scoring opportunities but he isnât sinking the pots at the moment. Thatâs a good sign to me. I just hope he doesnât fall foul of the press and social media demons playing with his head.
What an enigma. Absolutely world class finish yesterday but at other times itâs as if he closes his eyes and hopes for the best.
Still, his work rate is terrific and his commitment unquestioned; letâs hope that yesterdayâs goal gives him the confidence to push on. As the commentators pointed out yesterday, he has scored more goals than either Suarez or ManĂ© had done at this stage of their Liverpool careers.
So happy for him. That goal will do world of good to his morale. YNWA
Darwin seems to start every game like a bat out of hell. Incredible work rate for an hour. Then anonymous for the last 30mins. I wonder if theyâre working with him to harness it a bit. Choose his moments to put the turbos on
If only we had 3 of him in our midfield, how am I seeing this guy literally sprinting past Hendo who is sleep walking back when Wolves were on the counter.
Actually feel sorry for him he has to play in a side that has 3 pensioners behind them.
Our commentators over here were focusing on the âhe just needs a goalâ narrative, but I think that is wide of the mark. He has scored enough that if all it took was a goal then âitâ (whatever people are waiting for) would have clicked already. Over time he is going to have to get better in front of goal, but I think the bigger thing is fans are going to have to judge him on his entire package and not get so wrapped up around the chances he misses.
The âhe needs a goalâ narrative with him has been odd. Heâs scored at a solid rate per minute from the start of the season.
I suppose the glaring thing is the large number of big chances missed - youâd like to see him be more clinical, but we have always appeared to prioritize chance creation in our forwards which can be frustrating at times but far less than someone who isnât getting into positions.
Yep pretty much answered your own argument there.
Itâs been created because of his fortune in front of goal as opposed to the goals for game ratio (which is completely ok)
A narrative which will slowly die down over time.
Iâm not sure if Iâm misremembering this? But I recall Sir Bob being asked about the number of chances that Rushie was missing and his reply was something along the lines of âYes, but he gets into some lovely positions to miss themâ.
Thatâs how I feel about Darwin. It WILL click for him.
Part of the mountain he faces is the comparison to Haaland.
But of course the debate is slanted. Is anyone counting how many chances Haaland misses?
Youâd have to find somebody who watches City to know.
How is the debate slanted?
Haaland so far this season has scored 27 goals plus 3 assists.
I think it was a Norwegian article, and the data is from two games back, but they track big chances that strikers miss I.e. not pot shots or things that arenât good chances.
So far this season (as of a couple games ago) Nunez had missed 14 and Haaland had missed 10. Surprisingly, from a Liverpool perspective, Salah was also off his usual level, having missed 12 big chances.
Haaland will score a lot of goals at Man City due to the very large volume of clear goalscoring chances that will come his way. But even a machine like Haaland has been missing quite a few gilt edged opportunities, just not quite as many as Nunez, so far,
