Darwin NUNEZ: 2023/24

You can’t be too upset. Look at the state of some of Uniteds big signings.

Having a Manure supporting mate is your first mistake.

I know manure fans, never talk footy with them. It turns them into idiots.

Worst. B-side. Ever.

I was trying to be kind.

The only comparison between Nunez and Carroll is their haircut.

Problem is he has been here a year and still doesn’t look like scoring

Aside from the 15 he’s already scored.

I have my doubts about him ultimately becoming a success.

Couldn’t give a shit about other fans perceptions though.

Klopp often doesn’t change much in the first 3 league games of the season, before the first international break. We didn’t end pre-season exactly where we wanted in terms of balance of play (also transfers). Obviously there’s still work to do. He said that basically pre-season often continues a bit in the start of a new season. The team isn’t completed yet. Nunez will get his chance(s) this season. But I also have my doubts over his success here long term.

Nunez often looks like scoring however for all those chances he doesn’t appear to score as often as one might hope. If he took his chances he’d be the leagues top scorerer even if he only played 15mins per game!

Thus why I asked “when”.

He didn’t start for a good chunk of the past two months or the system.

And it’s a fair question to ask what trajectory the player is on for the medium- to long-term.

The Gakpo transfer and the system change introduced a lot of questions for me about the role Núñez will play this season and onwards, and nothing I have seen so far has done much of anything to answer those questions.

I’m not sure why we signed him anyway, as his style of play means he was never going to be a like-for-like Bobby replacement.

I thought it signalled that we would move away from that type of player, a change which I was open minded about. Bobby was the proverbial unicorn in many ways, and Núñez has certainly shown the different threat he can pose. But then Gakpo arrives – and supposedly was always a target? – and steps into that false 9 role fairly seamlessly. I really struggle to reconcile the two moves.

Depth is a good thing, but you’d think the idea for that money was to be acquiring a starter. We already had Jota covering the LF and CF positions.

I love me some Darwin and the chaos he creates near the opposition goal, but Gakpo fits and seems the sort of player (like Bobby) who glues the team together and gives it a consistency and resilience that is very important.

And I agree once that happened, Darwin’s role and future has become a mystery. A ton of potential waiting to be unlocked there, but no idea where he fits (unless Mo does leave next summer).

Playing wide is an easier role. Its one that is also better suited to his strengths and best matches what he spent the majority of his time at Benfica doing even if there he was ostensibly a striker. I suspect that moving forward that will be where we continue to see him used most often, with Gapko and Jota sharing the central role

I don’t think so. If he fails to nail the central spot here, he’ll probably need to find a new club. If he’s here post Salah and post Klopp, who knows what might happen. I just think him on the left at Liverpool is more optional if we have a lot of players missing, not one of the main plans. I believe he’s been brought as a striker, nothing else.

Hes always played better out wide
