Darwin NUNEZ: 2024/25

Id swap rhino for a blue whale.

They could just cum and the entire opposition would be swept away in the tidal wave of jizz

How did we get from Darwin to masturbatory blue whales?

Did we here why Darwin wasn’t involved against West Ham or was it just cos he has been in poor form?

Slot has been somewhat cryptic regarding his omission. First, he said that he was ill, now he’s saying that he wasn’t himself, whatever that means. He denied the rumours of a bust-up though.

What’s almost certain is that come summer he’ll be gone.

Is that self-contradictory? I’m not sure that it is.

I know that often when I’m ill I’m not myself even if I might no longer be contagious.

As I understand it, Slot was specifically asked if Nunez was ill and he kept giving the same answer. He could have meant that Nunez was indeed ill or that he just didn’t feel up to training? Who knows.

That’s the most important part.

Anyway, he’s in the training photos so let’s see what happens.

I know that his underlying numbers at Benfica were good but I still maintain that had Edwards still been DoF in 2022 then we don’t sign Nunez. We knew that to get the most out of him would require significant changes to our playing style - and hindsight is 20/20 but changes to get the best out of Nunez don’t seem worth it.

Genuine question. How do you get the best out of him? What exactly are his strengths?

He seems more suited to acounter attacking style with space in behind

But I do recall quite a few scenarios like this where he has er … missed the target. One on one in a breakaway where he has been put through is precisely where he looks a bit clueless.

Exactly, he had chances whereas now he isn’t even getting the chances, is underlying XG has been relatively good until this season, it’s just that it is XG rather than AG - actual goals

It’s not black and white, it’s not all about style. There were genuine question marks at the time we bought him, but it’s not like we bought someone who required an absolute change from top to bottom.

I doubt that much would suddenly change if we flipped many more things. And which things exactly? A lot of things come down to player quality and coaches, our coach as well, often talks about it. With some, there’s more room for improvement, with others, there’s less.

Do we want pace and physicality (in this famously physical league, blah blah)? Yes, we do. Does he have it? Yes, he has. Do we want overall a technically high quality player? Yes, we do. His is not great. The odd skill on the ball or full power/rage knuckle shots don’t make you technically of top level. Mentality, intelligence, tactical awareness? Yeah, he’s full of willingness to put a shift in, but can also be counter productive at a certain point, so not great either.

How well does he use it altogether? Not quite good enough and pretty inconsistent.

We flipped the structure this season which should’ve helped him. It obviously didn’t bring any serious improvement. Would a more creative Szobo help? That much? What else? Us playing like Leicester did with Vardy? I thought Nunez had a bit more than that? Apparently ā€œALL the tools to be a top strikerā€. Nah, his tools are overrated in the first place. Heard it before with the likes of Balotelli and Benteke.

Some of the excuses for Nunez I heard in last months are total clutching at straws. Deluded even.

It’s not a shame because not every player will be for this club/team/league. In our lifetimes supporting this club, Nunez is not the first ā€œNunezā€ and there will be more of them in the future.

It’s no drama, he’s not good enough for us. And I feel even though he might like the club/team/fans, he’s also willing to go elsewhere.

I don’t think it’s just the style of football that’s making him play well below his potential. For all the support he gets from the fans, he just doesn’t look like someone who’s enjoying the life at Liverpool. I’d go as far as to say that I think he never properly settled at the club. I hope that Hughes will be able to extract a good fee for him and that Nunez will rediscover happiness at his new club, hopefully with a PL winner’s medal around his neck, so all parties turn this situation into a win.

Klopp did his best to create chances for him. Even Salah had to play out wide to make room for him, the chance is there. He just isn’t able to finish it. He is very fast, makes very good runs in channel, but his on-ball skill is shit.

He could outspeed and outmuscled defenders in lesser leagues, but not in the Premier League. If I remember correctly, he had like 3 take-ons per game in Portugal, it’s close to zero here.

I think he could be an effective goal scorer in lesser leagues, like the way Lukaku dominated in Serie A, or worse, like Mitrović in the Championship. That the same way Im worried about Gyokeres, very similar story.

We know he has reacted to social media at times.

Wonder if his mental health isn’t in top shape? We have to be aware of this with players.
