Is the reason the fee is so public because Benfica owe a sell-on fee and that this party has no reason to keep this quiet?

I’ve just never seen a transfer like this at our club for a while where everything about the deal is known.

This signing is a completely different feeling then the other time we got a young 22 year old player for a record breaking fee with potential after a good season - Andy Carroll.

Carroll, if I recall correctly, was even bought when injured, and didn’t play for some games. Credit to Brendan Rogers for cutting ties as soon as possible when he came in by allowing Carroll to leave on loan.

Difference is this Lfc due their research. Apart from looking at what he does on the pitch -They find out what a player’s lifestyle is, who his friends are and what he’s like off the pitch.
Carroll was an utter panic buy to the help fans with losing Torres.
3 signings I never ever understood because they aren’t Lfc type players were Carroll, Balloteli and Benteke. Basically, all the same player at a cost of about £80m

That is wrong.

Carroll had already been identified by Kenny as a potential target for the summer, but when Torres forced his move, the club decided to bring the Carroll move forward as part of the deal

Benfica (Sport Lisboa e Benfica-Futebol) is a public traded company. They have a duty to report.

The Benfica statement reads;

"In the early morning hours of this Monday (0:44 am), Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD informed the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that it had reached an agreement with Liverpool FC for the sale of all rights to the player Darwin Nuñez, for the amount of 75 million euros.

"To the CMVM, Benfica’s SAD also informed that ‘the agreement provides for the payment of a variable remuneration, so the global amount of the sale could reach the amount of 100 million euros’.

“‘It is further informed that the aforementioned agreement is dependent on the signing of the player’s sports employment contract with Liverpool FC’, it is further explained in the official document.”

Shades of Loic Remy…

I guess it comes down to timeline in a way, because my memory of that period is us chucking in offers for half the strikers in Europe (like Llorente, but there were others), getting turned down and then at that point paying out for Carroll. Not saying he hadn’t been previously identified by Kenny (I genuinely don’t remember that but am happy to be corrected on that), but it’s also true there was a definite whiff of panic around our dealings as that January window neared a close.

I think the club would have learnt from the Fekir incident and would have had the health and fitness reports already present.

The medical is just a formality.

As I remember it Carroll had been identified but when Torres forced the clubs hand at the en d of the window,Carroll was the easier,I assume,to get.
There was,I think a degree of panic, but not total.

As i recall the Fekir deal fell through because his brother-agent kept trying to increase the wage demands even after a deal had been agreed - news that came through after the dodgy knee story. The knee story was initially released to protect the player.

I see some of our rivals and saying we have signed the Uruguayan Andy Carroll. God held them :grin:
