It’s sort of interesting that both MC and LFC have gone for a “big” guy up front. It almost seems like an admission of failure in the respective teams’ footballing philosophies in going for a target man up front.
Is it saying that Plan B in now Plan A, particularly in trying to consistently crack the small annoying nuts that are the Leeds/MUs/AVs of this world???
No, I don’t think so. I think it’s simply about adding variety to the ways that each teams can hurt the opposition. We’re not going from one approach to one where we ping balls into a big man. We’re just adding that as an extra string to our bow. For City it may represent a more significant change in philosophy but I doubt it does for us.
That’s a shame. So many of my childhood favourites don’t age well. ‘Entertainment’ is so much more frenetic now. There needs to be almost continuous stimulus to keep kids attention.
The Jungle Book, for example. Really dull now whereas when I was a kid I loved it.
I’ve noticed the reports in the UK press are quoting Nunez at costing a straight 100m whilst quoting Haaland in £. No mention of wages, either. It’s worth noting that both players are signing for roughly the club’s CL earnings for the previous year.
It’s not so much the hold up play by lumping the ball forward to gain position up field - mainly because that is largely unnecessary for us as we are usually in the opponent’s third for most of the game. It is more about having a bigger physical presence in and around the box. Yes we have VVD, Matip and so on for corners and set pieces but not whilst we are camped in and around the opponents 18-yard box in open play.
I’m looking at Darwin:TAA and Darwin:Salah/Diaz as clear points where there could be significant synergy.
I wouldn’t say this. He’s one of a few good young players with a lot of potential to have emerged during the last year. One year ago, nobody from the larger public outside of Uruguay and Lisbon would have known him. Now, he’s transferred at at a record price. That’s how football goes. Tchouaméni going to Madrid for 100m is a similar example.
It doesn’t mean that he won’t be worth the money though, and he might turn out to be even better than your typical marquee signing like Haaland, Mbappe etc. Let’s see how it pans out.
UK press are fucking useless. Today they’re all reporting the Haaland fee at £51m but the consensus up to now had been that his release clause was €75m. Then they don’t seem to be able to tell the difference between € and £ and it only takes one to fuck that up and then all the other feeder sites will copy and paste it.
Unfortunately Nunez is always going to get compared to Haaland simply because they arrived in the league at the same time, to the top two clubs and for pretty sizeable fees.
I was in the pub watching the end of season Liverpool game and an AV supporter said (straight faced) that we bought the league and that the amount of money we spend is far more than all of the others. He went on to say that that was the reason why he didn’t want Liverpool to win the quadruple. When I asked whether he’d rather see MU or MC or Chelsea win a quadruple, he said yes! Sad, just sad I thought to myself.
i think Haaland will score shitloads against the dregs when they dont bother turning up when playing city.
So he will hit 3s and 4s against those shite teams.
Be interesting to see how he does against the big boys.
Both players look likely to cost a similar amount when transfer, add ons and agent fees are taken into consideration so the big difference will no doubt be in players salaries where i have seen reported that Haaland is due around 375k per week and Nunez at about a third of that .
I read a City fan trying to claim that Haaland will have left in 3 years while Nunez will probably be here for 8 so we will end up paying more for Nunez.
