I can agree with this. There are also other important difference between proper Fascism and that which Trump is. Fascism has clear definitions, among them is an economic system and much more. Trump does not fit the label. But he is a Neo-Fascist (also called ignorant bullshit fascist by some political scientists) I would argue. Certainly, he is absolutely and this cannot be contested, a corrupt nepotistic plutocrat authoritarian if one wants to be precise.
My source on this by the way, is Bernt Hagtvedt, one of the worlds leading historians on fascism. I attended his class on Neo-Fascism and Nationalist Movements in the West and I had a long interesting discussion with him after class over 2-3 cups of coffee. This was just before lock-down, and Bernt Hagtvedt insisted that it was important to protect the labels and that they were precise and that it was in most ways wrong to call Trump a fascist despite he himself sympathising with those who wants to smear him with that label. But Neo-Fascist is a different label, a more fluent definition, not so rigid. But if one is precise, he is a corrupt nepotistic plutocrat authoritarian. And having a nepotistic plutocrat authoritarian in power is, well, quite negative as well.

What we have seen so far is that Trumpism is much less powerful without Trump. There will be a constituency for a Hawley, Cruz or Rubio lead Trumpist campaign, but it will be much weakened. I think what we are more likely to see is a return to the dog whistles that keep the unsaid things unsaid…it hits most voters in the same place, it just doesnt amp up the support in the same way but also plays on the instincts of the media to not call politicians racist or liars.

He is an authoritarian, there is no doubt about that. Not being able to successfully do what you want, does not make you less authoritarian. Authoritarianism isn’t a system in itself like Totalitarianism. Or it is, but it doesn’t have the rigid framework that Totalitarianism has. There is a difference between the ism and being an authoritarian figure. It is a term used for strong men that care little about constrains and wants to control the courts.

In a way, I am thinking that Kamala has the most difficult road. She is carrying us on her shoulders into 2024, which may be the real election.
Like I said though I don’t want to discuss 2024 and as usual I am unsticking to my word.

I have the complete opposite take. One of the lessons of the last 4 years is that the things we thought were in place provide no protection if the people who are supposed to wield those powers choose not to use them.
He illegally fired people responsible for independent oversight of the things he was doing, across law enforcement, DoJ, and IGs. What we found was the political consequences were nil because of how partisan the country is, and the criminal consequences are nil because of fucked up rules.

Anyone know if the last mail-in votes are military ? If so, we should maybe be slightly, slightly (but only ever so slightly) cautious, they lean Republican usually.
