Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

If you go on twitter you would be convinced 538 claimed Hillary was a certainty. I think they eventually gave Trump a 35% chance on election day.

The scary thing is that the actual soundtrack he’s moving to makes you think it’s another parody. YMCA. I shit you not.

I saw Darren Rovell (apparently in the Sports betting business, and a sports reporter) say Silver got it wrong in 2016 by giving him 28% - which attracted lots of comments including from Silver himself on how probabilities work…

Not sure why Old Holborn is being quoted on this forum - he said some nasty stuff about those at Hillsborough

Not aware of any comments. Secondly i’m not auditing an account before deciding whether to post. The post has nothing to do with Hillsborough.

This made me laugh.

I’m just ready for this to be over.
More a vote for me on the vice presidential candidates than the presidential candidates, and that’s sadder than I want to admit.

Regardless, I hope that in 4 years time we can have some better candidates.

Oh, and for anyone worrying, regardless of who wins, the country and the world will be fine.

Why is that???

Why?
If Biden wins, he’s going to be 78 years old before he would take office. Just not really trusting the health (physical and mental) at this stage. And the mental and physical stresses of being President will be much greater than any other position Biden has had to date.

If Trump wins, he’s 74 now - so no youngster himself… but that’s not the reason for him. Ever since he got elected last time, there has been a large contingent of democrats and media that have wanted him out… and I think there would be some sort of impeachment and maybe it works this time.

Just not sure that either Presidential candidate will still be in the office 4 years from now.
That said, I hope I’m wrong.

By the way - is it a good or bad idea to say that I think it’s still technically legally possible to be elected president in the USA without a single “popular vote”?

It was technically possible even through the last presidential election, but I’m not sure if more states have decided to split votes or require the electors from their state to follow the popular vote.

Pence is also very old, right?

I think I saw someone establish that you could win the US Presidency with just under 25% of the vote if the distribution lined up perfectly. Presumably some assumptions about turnout in that.

Eh, Pence is 61. I’m not as worried about that as an age these days. That said I would prefer someone in their 50s. Then again, maybe I’m just not as worried about his age because Trump and Biden are so much older.

For reference - President Obama is currently only 59.

Arminius, that is the most accurate and legal way (just under 25% of the popular vote). To get to “0” popular votes you need to have some electors from certain states do things that would be unorthodox — but technically not illegal. That said, in this day and age it wouldn’t fly.

Yeah, ‘faithless electors’ rules are quite the patchwork.
