Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

It is ridiculous. Much worse than ridiculous. Apparently, 20 January is the Day of the Storm, which they are waiting for:

Also funny that they are biblical on their interpretation of why Q is silent, lol.
Like I said above, I have been reading bout this, increasing grown more and more concerned when they ramp up support (should not be possible considering how stupid this is, but here we are).
I suppose there is little damage in posting this to highlight how crazy these people are. Worrisome that so many in the US are believing this crap.

“Decades to come”. He is74 now, so I guess that means he will be eternal leader like they have in North Korea.

By the way, titular ? :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Maybe someone should tell her ? Or maybe not  :smirk:

At a meeting on Wednesday at the White House, President Trump had something he wanted to discuss with his advisers, many of whom have told him his chances of succeeding at changing the results of the 2020 election are thin as a reed.

He then proceeded to press them on whether Republican legislatures could pick pro-Trump electors in a handful of key states and deliver him the electoral votes he needs to change the math and give him a second term, according to people briefed on the discussion.

It was not a detailed conversation, or really a serious one, the people briefed on it said. Nor was it reflective of any obsessive desire of Mr. Trump’s to remain in the White House.

“He knows it’s over,” one adviser said. But instead of conceding, they said, he is floating one improbable scenario after another for staying in office while he contemplates his uncertain post-presidency future.

There is no grand strategy at play, according to interviews with a half-dozen advisers and people close to the president. Mr. Trump is simply trying to survive from one news cycle to the next, seeing how far he can push his case against his defeat and ensure the continued support of his Republican base.

By dominating the story of his exit from the White House, he hopes to keep his millions of supporters energized and engaged for whatever comes next.

From the NYT…this characterisation certainly makes sense to me, given what we know about his criminal lack of intelligence and his inability to think past whatever it is the person in front of him is saying.

I guess that means the real damage isn’t being done now…that won’t become apparent until someone with half a brain becomes Trump 2.0, using his playbook but with an actual plan in place.

If Warren and/or Sanders get cabinet posts, they will have to vacate their Senate seats right??? That would leave the Democrats with a even smaller minority, at least for the time being, right???

This should be the correct spelling of the cunt’s name.

Tht part there also implies that he has some sort of plan, which I don’t believe at all. I just think he’s trying to drag it out.

The moves in the DoD are interesting though and may yet shoot my theory down. Why??

I didn’t notice till now :innocent:. The auto-correct in my mobile has done a hell of a job :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:.

The most credible explanation I have seen is from Asha Rangappa, a former FBI lawyer, who says the choice of personnel and their track records suggests this is geared towards covering up and destroying as much evidence of criminal wrong doing as they can before they have to give the keys to Biden. Even this takes some planning that may be beyond Trump so it is relevant to point out that Karl Rove has become increasingly prevalent behind the scenes. And of course there is Bill Barr, who is an all time great at this shit.

Quite disturbing if true. Amazing that they’ve managed to hide it sufficiently well to avoid it all spilling out

Just wondering about this. You are probably correct here, but so much of his behaviour is reflected throughout much of his career, and I seem to remember there was a time many years ago where he (or his staff) locked out (tax?) officials out of his office so files could be shredded.

Yes, though I don’t think that is in the Constitution either, so in the post-norm era, who knows?

This is in fact completely wrong. The Ineligibility Clause, the Sinecure Clause, and the Emoluments Clause are all together in Article 1 as basic principles of the US Constitution.

*Good thing the semester in graduate school where I was a TA for 1st year US politics, the tutorial was after lunch

Is there any example where a Secretary (or lower ranked cabinet members) simultaneously held their Senate/House seat?

It’s rather unique since Member of Parliament retains his/her seat even if he/she becomes minister.

Doh! First coffee of the day - of course it is in the Constitution. It is in Article 1, right up front. To be fair, it is right next to the Emoluments Clause, so I have ignored it for four years like everyone else.

Completely different structure to the executive branch though.

There may be examples in the distant past, but not in this current form of government. They are both full time jobs in two different branches of the government. When I worked for government (typically how academic jobs in state universities are classified) I had to report all outside income and was barred from receiving anything greater than 20% of my state salary. It seems ridiculous, especially in academis where there is such a natural potential for consultancy, but if you work for the government you are being paid by the people’s money. Getting tax payer funded salary and then putting your time to extracurricular work is not appropriate.

However, I dont think it will be an issue. I think the calls for Senators to get cabinet appointments tend to come from people outside of the discussion and reflect either a lack of imagination or a purposefully planted story designed to advance the reputation of said senator. I think the only one I have heard that I put any credence to is Chris Coons because he is so personally tight with Biden and his seat would be uncomplicated to fill.
